I got fired from my last job - first time that's ever happened as I've always been valued as an excellent employee. So I don't list them as a reference if possible. When I was looking for a new job, I glossed over the specifics of leaving the company and tried to make it sound like the decision to leave was my decision.

If you have to give a contact to your last job, definitely direct them to Human Resources. The HR department is not supposed to give any more information than your hire date and position.

Just tell the truth if you are asked. Otherwise don't mention it.

Proverbs 17:27 Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. 28 Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.
