I can think of only three reasons why a person would not pay attention to global warming, which I consider to be the largest crisis that humankind has ever faced.

1) They simply don't know about it. It really is just starting to become part of the public debate. Al Gore has done a great public service by bringing the subject into the light. Most people are busy living their lives and trying to make ends meet. Global warming has not had much airtime in the major media, but that is changing and it will continue to change as the impacts of global warming are increasingly felt.

2) There is a shockingly dishonest and dismaying effective media campaign being waged by a few of the most disreputable of the oil companies, Exon is at the center of it, to confuse and distract the public. They have hired a few dishonest scientists to basically lie and claim that there is a scientific controversy, that the evidence is weak, that GW is just a theory, that there are discrepancies in the data, that the earth has been warmer in the past, that people used to be worried about an ice age and now GW so they cannot make up their minds, that scientists are motivated by money and so cannot be trusted ... the list of lies seems endless.

3) It takes a fair amount of effort and time to understand the issues and the arguments supporting the global warming hypothesis and it takes some science background to be comfortable with the subjects that are required to fully understand it. Most people do not have the time, the interest or the background to become truly knowledgeable so that they can actually decide the issue for themselves. Therefore most of the public is forced to trust expert opinions. The naysayers know that and all they need to do is sew the seeds of doubt to greatly weakening public support for the steps that need to be taken.

That is one of the great things about An Inconvenient Truth. It is a superb effort at making the highly technical issues of global warming far more accessible to those who have better things to do with their time than to science homework.

It is therefore up to those of us who do understand the issue to help to educate the rest of us. We will need everyone pulling together to have the greatest impact in combating global warming. Call the naysayers lies and spread the truth.

You see the plan is to let the equatorial regions with all of the oil become unlivable, so those people will be forced to move out. Then we can go in and claim all of that land, and suddenly there will be a cure for the ozone layer and the land will be habitable again, but now it will belong to us.

Ohh really, there isn't such a thing as Global Warming, its all in Owl Gores head.

Ahh but I can see the hate mail already for poking fun at a serious subject. :)

Mostly because people now realize that they are not gonna suffer any consequences from it in their lifetimes...they basically don't care....This will be a huge problem that our grandchildren will be dealing with tho...:-(
