I completely agree that we shouldn't accomodate to the native language of immigrants. I find it ridiculous when I actually see billboards along the freeway completely in Spanish. This is America, like it or not the national language is English. If a foreigner wants to come here, welcome! But they can't expect to come here and be accomodated so they can be lazy and not learn the language of the country they are in. If you want to function in this country, you need to speak English. Plain and simple. I wouldn't expect to go to Mexico and not learn Spanish or to have the government waste tax money to have translators hired in classes for my kids so they wouldn't have to learn Spanish. It's just stupid. Of course I realize with the instruction manuals that it is because it is international or made in different countries, my answer wasn't really targeted at that. It was more targeted at in general the USA accomodating foreign speakers (mainly Spanish) with Spanish billboards or hired translators off of tax money. And I know that the country was built off of immigration but we can't have 50 different national languages and have them all written next to each other on signs! So it is one language which is English and you should know it if you want to function here.

English is only the primary language here because so many people from England settled here. The native language isn't English it would be whatever the native americans spoke or currently speak. This country was built 100% on immigration and its still (even if its unfortunate) the backbone of the American economy. It seems present that America is more concerned about capitalism than anything else and this requires cheap local labor. So immigrants or illegal aliens are the perfect source for this. That or we'd have to have slavery again, and I really don't think anyone wants that.

First of all, there are speakers of other languages in the United States, so products have other languages on them so that they can sell to speakers of other languages.

Also, the manufacturer may be selling their products in many countries, and so put other languages on there so they can send the product to countries that use different languages. For example, many, many products have both English and French, because the manufacturer wants to sell that product in Canada, where labels are required to have both English and French.

Are you trying to say that you are offended when you see something in another language on a product label? Why should that be? The English is still on there...

Because everything we buy is made in Taiwan or Germany, and assembled in Mexico or Brazil. The factory workers need to know what they're putting together too.

Also, once it's made, it gets sold to a hundred different countries, most of which do not speak english. It's easier to print the stuff in six languages, and tape up all the boxes at the factory. Just be glad that English is usually on the first page.

It is more of a positive thing than a negative.

The citizens of many countries speak more than one language while we tend not to. It has a side benefit of helping us learn other languages.

Its real purpose is to reduce costs by just printing one set of directions that can be used worldwide.

Companies don't have to segregate inventory based on the language on the box or the directions. If a store needed to stock 100 widgets and the widget manufacturer only had in stock widgets with Spanish directions, we could not shop at that store for widgets because the store would have to wait to stock widgets with English language boxes.

Because products aren't sold only into America. They're sold into other countries where other languages are spoken. It doesn't make sense to have different sets of instructions based on language; it'd be too hard to keep track of inventory, making sure the right language gets to the right country. So the simple solution is to print multiple languages on one sheet of paper or in one booklet. Easy to track and cheaper too.

Part of the reason is that English isn't our official language. In fact, we don't HAVE an official language. Shocked the heck outta me... I'm all for English as our official language, but that won't change the fact that many other languages are alive and well in this country.

Do the other languages on these instruction booklets actually get in your way? Do they cause problems for you? Live with it. It's the new global economy.

And the next time you want to defend your right to a unilingual English-language culture in your country, you might want to try improving your own English syntax and spelling first. Just a hint.

The products are sold internationally, so the manufacturers do this to save money by using the same packaging everywhere and putting all the necessary language instructions on everything.
