Sit down & commence slow deep breathing. Try to clear your mind of thoughts.
5 Min. later you'll feel much better.
The technique requires lots of practice.
Rapid short breaths are physically and mentally destructive & corrosive.

The first thing to do is prevent them from happening. Many people are allergic or sensitive to food additives. Panic attacks can occur because you have eaten something you are sensitive to.
The most common food/food ingredient/additives responsible for this are:
calcium propionate (a mold suppressant in most breads and whey powders)
MSG (monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer)
annatto (a natural coloring used to make foods yellow or creamy-looking)
tartrazine (another yellow coloring)
artificial food coloring (Red # 40, and Blues are notorious, blues combined with tartrazine is the absolute worst)
Polysorbate 80 ( a preservative)
"natural flavoring" or anything with the glutamate ending to it can be a mask for MSG...not as a straight additive, but what happens to it when your body tries to use it.
Taurine and/or CoEnzyme Q10 (nutritional supplements) can help stop a reaction to these things, but the best thing to do is not consume them at all, once you identify which ones set off the reaction.

Control your breathing. Deep slow ones are the best. Take a very deep cleansing breath first.
Remind yourself that it will be over soon and all the previous ones weren't permanent.
Mental concentration and remove yourself from distractions (noise, light, people).
Use a deliberate physical trigger (like slapping your leg or snapping your finger) to signal the start of your countermeasures. After you get good at controlling it that physical motion may be all you need to stop the cycle.

It all depends on why you have them. Many things can cause panic attacks, especially stressful situations. But, if you didn't have them before, it is probably due to over stress or a situation you are having for the first time in your life. See your doctor, he can help.

Several years ago I had 3-4 panic attacks and have not had one since (knock wood!).
My doctor advised me not to let them interfere with my life because it is easy to become agoraphobic (afraid to leave the house) because you get scared you will have one and someone will notice.
He told me that when it happens just tell yourself that you are fine, just having a panic attack and it will pass soon. Just go with it and don't let it freak you out.
There are drugs your doctor can prescribe if they get too bad. Good luck!

I'm on Zoloft for generalized anxiety disorder. If you have them frequently get help. If it's not very often, move yourself to a quiet location and take very deep breaths and think of something calming

simple breathing techniques help me. And visualization, picture yourself in your favorite (calm) place. fill in every detail. If it is outdoors all the grass, trees, sounds, smells etc. Inside put everything in there, Pictures, furniture etc. Just be calm and remember.
