My nephew has cerebral palsy. He recently went on a trip, where there was a lot of woodland, when he came back his lips and face were blue, since then he has been in hospital for over a week. He has lung disease, he had a biopsy on his lung and it came back saying that he has some sort of disease linked with bats! He has not been bitten, so rabies may be wiped out, he is on a respitory machine in and has been heavily sedated. He has a very low immune system. Fungal infection has also been diagnosed. Can someone please shed any light or send links etc. THX DESPERATE!!!

It is most definately a fungus. Where did he go camping? These are the most common pulmonary fungal infections that can come from being outside.
Histoplasma capsulatum, endemic to the Ohio, Missouri and Mississippi river drainage areas and the St. Lawrence Seaway, can be due to bat guano, usually just treated with bed rest in healthy people
Blastomyces dermatitidis, endemic mainly to areas aroung the St. Lawrence, Mississippi and Ohio rivers and the southeastern US, associated with rotting wood, treated with intraconazole
Coccidioides immitis, highly endemic in the San Joaquin Valley and the Lower Sonoran Desert of the southwestern US
Without knowing where your nephew was, I'd have to guess it is Histoplasmosis just because of the bat connection.

Hi Cass. Reading your question gave me chills. I have been where you are not all that long ago, and I understand exactly how desperate you feel. I am so sorry. My baby daughter suffered respiratory failure in October and had a biopsy to try to determine a cause and to help decide if survival was even a possibility for her. Her cause was never identified, and histologically, her biopsy showed diffuse alveolar damage, interstitial lung disease. She somehow managed to survive even though nobody (including me) thought she could, but she is still affected and is still on oxygen (she sometimes can come off a few hours a day now, so she is getting better). I'm no expert, but having a child with a condition like this, I read a LOT. If I had to guess, I'd agree with the medical student and say histoplasmosis because of the bats. I am so sorry this has happened to your nephew, and I truly wish there was something I could do to help. Your family will be in my prayers. Take care.

Well, I'm certainly no expert, but I wonder if he's been tested for Lyme Disease, caused from tick bites. Maybe he has hantavirus, which is caused from coming in contact with rodent droppings. Good luck to you and your family.

Tell doc to rule out hentavirus and lyme disease. If fungal , consider tuberculosis as well.
