Bourbon on the rocks, and I'll tell you why. Obviously you are new to this, and probably a little nervous. If you drink soft drinks or water, you will look like someone who has no self control and can't handle the real world. If you drink something light and tasty (wine or a drink mixed with juice, tonic or soda), you'll drink too much. Drink something very strong instead, and it will remind you that your are drinking booze with every small sip, and you will actually drink less alcohol by the end. Another option is to start with a vodka or gin and tonic, then switch to club soda or tonic with lime. You get one drink under your belt for nerves and credibility, then you look like you are drinking the same thing all night.

Beer, it keeps you full so you don't drink too much plus it doesn't have as much alcohol as a drink so even if you drink more than you should chances are you won't make an as* out of yourself in front of your co workers

Whenever I'm out with co-workers, I generally stick to beer and try to pace myself.
If it's an actual work function, then I limit myself to 2 drinks.

For me, it's all about maintaining my professionalism. I work too hard to then have something stupid happen and then have my coworkers or subordinates lose respect for me.
The higher you go, the more important this generally becomes...and like I said, it works for me personally.
Just something to keep in mind.

Cheers.

Wine if it is semi-formal. Beer if it is casual. Most people can enjoy wine and beer. Anything unusual and someone will end up complaining.
