We have to know what kind of dove.

Mourning Dove

Sexes similar, but males slightly larger and slightly more colorful, with bluish crown and pink chest.

Senegal Doves

Sexual Dimorphism using the hatching hair is accurate in Senegal Doves

reddish hatching haired young are "male"
non-reddish hatching haired young are "female"

Diamond Doves

They have red eyes encircled by a conspicuous fleshy red cere (being larger in the males). The hens tend to show more brown over the head, neck and upper body, with the eye ring being much smaller.

etc, etc

I don't think you can tell the difference. I've heard that you can't tell the difference for most birds just by looking you-know-where. Maybe if the male/female is a certain color... but that prob. wouldn't apply to doves.

Maybe ask a vet to check for you?.... or just stick two random doves in the same cage/enclosure and see what happens. :-\ ...just an idea.

The girl dove will lay eggs while the boy dove hangs out at the mall.

if you've got the popular "ring-neck dove" the male is usually the one who's coo-ing.
DNA is the best way but if you watch their behavior you can see male from female

however, knowing what type of dove you have would greatly help since some are sexually dimorphic and some are not.

The most accurate and humane way id DNA sexing. It involves one drop of blood sent to a lab and you get the results in 3 days to a week.

Your Avian Veterinarian may offer this procedure.

BIRDTALK magazine advertises a place that does this. go to www.birdtalkmagazine.com and look for advertising, and it should be there. The place sends you the cars and explains what to do.
