"Forgive them Father for they know not what they do"
If this is the case, then it's okay to be an Atheist because we apparently know not what we do.... right?
Or is it "Forgive them Father, heck they'll go to hell anyway"?

They can pray for forgiveness all they want. If they had actually read the bible, then they would realize that we're all going to hell, if they've ever taken the lord's name in vain:

LUKE 12:10, "And everyone that says a word against the Son of Man, that will be forgiven; But he that blasphemes against The Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

MARK 3:29, "Whoever blasphemes against The Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of everlasting sin."

MATTHEW 12: 31-32 "Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come".

How did the Father forgive them? It was by providing a plan by which they could be saved, but not all accepted His offer of salvation. Jesus said, "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved" (Mark 16:16) In Acts 2, about 3000 of the people guilty of Christ's murder followed this plan and received remission of sins.

Also, if they were unconditionally forgiven at the moment Christ said "forgive them", then they were forgiven of the act of crucifying Jesus. This forgiveness of one act did not forgive them of subsequent acts if they went right back into a sinful lifestyle. They still needed to repent.

but are you really ignorant to the fact that there is a God? He meant "forgive them father, they do not understand that I am your son" and if he was just trying to say "heck, they'll go to Hell anyway" then why did he say "forgive them"

Everything can be forgiven by Christ if He so desires,
except for that phrase the other person used about
blaspheming the Holy Spirit. Being an atheist is not
a part of that category so the other writer doesn't
understand this scripture.

when Jesus said this, he meant that the sins you committ are those u know not of. like say you committ a sin and no one has never told u that it was wrong, until someone correct u u will think and believe there is nothing wrong with it. but also, people know what they are doing is wrong, but they do it anyways not knowing that God is looking at them. if ur an Atheist, and wonder if God will forgive u then you are not an atheist because u do believe there is a God and therefore u know u are doing wrong.

People can CHOOSE to be an athiest, but that is just it- it is a CHOICE you make- usually based on some type of evidence, which probably means you KNOW what you are doing.

You are acknowledging something exists- to then turn around and deny that it does.

If you are a Christian, the Bible says the Fool says in his heart there is no God. (Psalm 14.1) It also states that nature and the world speaks of him- like the earth and creation itself are evidence.

When persecuting the Christ, they did not retain/know that he was in fact the Christ, until he died and one confessed surely this was the Son of God.

Jesus was crucified as the atonement for our sins - the shedding of his blood was required - thus since it had to be done and he knew it. He voluntarily laid his life down for our redemption thus, he prayed that the sin the soldiers were committing (killing an innocent) would not be held against them. Since Jesus was God in flesh he could forgive their sins.

When one causes injury, without really understanding, to others by words and action and wreaks vengeance, the sufferer feels sorry for the perpetrators and uses this expression.

My understanding of that passage is that if you have the knowledge of Jesus Christ, but you CHOOSE to be an atheiest (for example) then you do know what your doing.

If you've never heard the gospel of Christ though, or, for whatever other reasons you dont know knwo anything about it, and you go and do stuff, then you dont know what your doing...right??

Tahts just my interpretation though...

Judgment is up to God....not up to me.

Why would we need to be forgiven for refusing to deny reality?
