Reasons:

1. With the very noble but often misplaced notion of trying to enlighten the person who posed the question ...

2. For the license to be even more sarcastic since the precedent has been set by the person who posed the question...

3. To prove to others that he/she got as good or better rhetorical skills though why bother in the first place...

Lastly, in the hopes that they have one-upped the ante or even quashed the question so as to prevent more mi-guided questions being posed...

...human are such vain creatures...

Because we want to give them the benefit of the doubt that their question may not be sarcastic or rhetorical (much like why I"m taking the time to answer you right now!)

Am I supposed to answer this? Or is this one of those questions that is obviously sarcastic and just trying to see if someone will answer seriously?

Because religion kills... That is very serious. People are willing to strap C4 around their waists in the name of their god. It sounds ludicrous, but it is true... Which makes it extremely serious

I honestly think that some people are too stupid to recognize sarcasm when they see it. I've seen a bit of it around here. Sad, really.
