Because ultimately we all need to feel that we are not alone in life or death. Perhaps we need to believe that death is not the end.

I love it when theists claim that it takes the complete cessation of normal rational thought, e.g. the distressing prospect of one's imminent death, to make one consider believing in the existence of a deity.
Since atheists already know that religion is simply a product of irrationality, wishes and fears, rather than a logically justified worldview, this only serves to reinforce our position and reassure us that we are right. Well done ;-)

have you been in the room when one says that?
I think you are just throwing things in the air. If they are on their death bed I imagine that god is the last thing on their minds, if they never believed in him before I really dont think they will look for him to be there helping them out.

Provide evidence for your claim.
Oh, and to the first person who answered: the accredited organization American Atheists was founded by two WWII veterans, one of whom, a marine, was completely paralyzed in the line of duty. So not only are you making a statement without evidence, but I just disputed it with fact.

I think because they have an encounter with God...its that one last experience, that one last chance and something happens in their hearts and minds.
I think its proof God exists...

Many amazing things are possible in your imagination. The real trick - is keeping precise track between that and reality. Try it.
