a lot of states have breed specific laws covering what they think are "dangerous" breeds - pits, rottis, dobis, german shepherds, akitas, staffies, and several others, and insurance companies are using this as a guide. they might deny you homeowner's insurance completely, or just the liability portion if the dog lives in the house. some will cover you for liability, but you'll have to pay through the nose.
when i had my shepherd and akita mix, my insurance agent (i live in NY) advised me (unofficially, of course) to make sure they were licensed as "mixed" breeds, which i did. unfortunately, if you have a pure bred WITH PAPERS, it would be difficult to deny his/her lineage should something happen. in that case, the insurance company can come after you for lying to them. however, if the pooch's breed is just "say-so," it's pretty much your word against whoever.
hope this helps, junior. and i'm sure your dog is GREAT! i think pits are one of the coolest breeds out there. good luck!

We have had a lot of people come into our office asking this same question. We are not able to lie about the breed of dog. The insurance company will come by & will note what type of dog you have, including taking pictures. They will want to know who your vet is. If they call & the dog is registered as a pit bull, and your telling them it's not, they will cancel your policy.
However, what Dr. has been doing for these people is stating how long he has been treating the pet, that he knows the owner & that the dog is no threat to the public. With a couple insurance companies this has worked. I'm not sure about all of them though because I forgot to ask the people.
This is probably your best bet.

When I moved to a new home and needed homeowners insurance, I was asked by the agent what type of dogs I had. I have a Pitt Bull and had no trouble getting insurance.

Call it a terrier. AKC has Pit Bulls (somehting like American Staffordshire Terriers, or Bull Terriers) in the terrier group.
Yes, a little shady, but it is the truth.
Edit: Call it a terrier mix. I just spoke to my wife (who deals with dogs professionally), she said don't call it a Staffordshire terrier.

They can and most likely will find out especially if your dog hurts or kills someone and you go to report it to insurance. So, sounds like yer basically screwed. Unless you don't tell them you have dogs.

If they do find out it is insurance fraud. Better to be honest.
