Vancomyicin Resistant Enterococcus or VRE is an infection that does not respond to the antibiotic Vancomyicin... This used to be the strongest antibiotic around, but over the years bugs have grown that can resist it.

The good news is that there are new antibiotics that will kill these buggers. Make sure your mom is seeing an Infectious Disease Specialist.. I'm not one... I believe a new drug named Tygacil will zap it, but wether it's appropriate or not depends on your mother's overall condition... age, kidney function, co-existing chronic diseases like diabetes so on and so forth.

Best advice I can give you is to make sure she's seen by an Infectious Disease Doctor. It's obvious that your mom has had a bout with infections before and the doctor, probably not an ID specialist, gave her Vanco.... This is the result of empirically prescribing an antibiotic without obtaining a culture to isolate the bug and gettig a sensitivity study to see which antibiotic it will respond to.

And don't seek medical advice over the internet. Doctors hate that and you run the chance of being misinformed.
