Yeah, I'm 5 days away from being 18 and I just don't get it. I'm not going to be any more mature then than I am right now.

If you're 17 and 11 months, you are still not 18. Eighteen isn't exactly the "all knowing" age, but it definately represents the age you're free to do most things, and the age you're "legal". At 18 you can legally be tried as an adult, you can have consensuall sex, you can buy tobacco, you can buy a house, own a credit card, own a car, ect. You're legally responsible. The laws are different from state to state, in states like mine - Massachusetts the legal age for most everything is 18, because at 18 you're past the major changes in puberty, and in college.
If you're talking about sexual consent, it's because every state sets different standards. In Massachusetts the age for consent is 16.
I personally would want to wait until I'm at least 20 before doing anything sexual, because I'm moral, honest, and enjoy school over intimacy.

Nope...it's just depending on the lawmakers who believe which age is the right age of concent. Some places like CA are much more dangerous then places like New Mexico. It just depends on the state's culture.

In Michigan it is 17. I doubt this is an issue of brains!!! Some 18 year olds are very immature. States decide their laws. You cannot put an age on common sense!

1. Actually 18 is still too young for most things...they have the most driving deaths by far...why...not mature enough to handle and understand responsibility.
2. If the asker is the one 17...please learn to spell first, then ask to be treated like an adult

18 is a more or less random age.
If one were measuring maturity, or good sense, or the ability to tell right from wrong, etc, it would be a different age for each person. that would be messy.

Each state is free to rule itself that is the beauty of the USA. That is one of the major freedoms we are granted and why it is important to vote and pay attention.
