I was just thinking about this when I was on the transit......if someone tried to ask you the time and you didn't know they were talking to you till they said it twice, what would you say; "Pardon me," "Excuse me," "What," or just look at them with a raised eyebrow?

Which would be most polite?

BTW, that is art (the pic) Luis Royo to be exact. Nothing portraying my image.

But what are you sorry for?

Pardon me
It sounds more like "sorry", because I am sorry for just sitting here and ignoring them, they will understand that I did not hear them.

Either excuse me or pardon me would polite. Just a raised eyebrow would be more rude.

I think I would just sign back to them that I was deaf and let them look at my watch.
I am not deaf but at least that way we both got what we wanted, my dignity and there time. It would be a win, win scenario.
They would not feel slighted and I would not look stupid with my lip hanging down or eyebrow raised up.

Look at them with a raised eyebrow and say," were you talking to me." Then give them the time.

Well if you are any indication of what your picture looks like and you ride the transite that way you will get some funny looks.

Probably pardon me would be most appropriate. I generally look at people and say, "I'm sorry?"

I'd apologized for not hearing them, because I'm truly hearing impaired. People tends to be very forgiving of us "handicapped".

I always say (in a questioning, polite voice) "I'm sorry?"

This way if it's a gang member they don't think you're challenging them with a "Huh?", "what?", "You talkin' to me?". . .it's really the only way to go!

I ususally just say Hmmm? or What? No one's acted offended so far.

I would tell them the time, just like they asked, and accepted their thank you.
