At least atheist know what they believe. There are so many people calling themselves Christians who are not sure what the religion really is or only follow half or very little of the teachings. I respect atheist and Christian fundamentalist alike. If you are going to believe in something, believe in it all the way.

People who are respectful of others deserve respect in return. I suppose those of you who don't respect someone who lives a moral life and is respectful, because they are an athiest would respect a child molester or killer because they are saved. As for those who said an athiest isn't sure of their beliefs, well then they aren't an athiest they are agnostic. I am an athiest, I don't feel I deserve anymore respect then anybody else because of my beliefs, I am married to a Catholic who feels the same way about religion as I do. It is a personal choice and should have nothing to do with how you are treated.

I believe that atheists should get just as much respect as anyone else. However, don't generalize people by saying that many people who call themselves Christians only know it half-heartedly. There are people who ARE Christians and have read the entire bible and know the beliefs, and really do believe in them, and follow and live by them. Another reason that people are like that is because, many children, (a lot of Catholics) are baptised at birth, therefore, they have no choice in the religion or what they are able to believe in, perhaps until later in life. Everyone should get equal respect.

I think atheists should be respected. Christianity is a religion. According to dictionary.com, a religion is:

1. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
2. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

Nowhere in here does it say that religion is the only way to live. It's just one way to approach life. There is no hard evidence for it, you just have to have faith. People who have faith in a supernatural being shouldn't disrespect people without it because religion is based only on faith. Other people prefer to believe only in what their senses tell them. Disrespecting atheists are equivalent to a hard-core believer in UFOS trashing skeptics who only believe in aliens if they have hard evidence for them. Of course, I am not saying religious people are like UFO nuts, I'm just saying both require blind faith.

I am also pretty certain I'm going to get VERY disprespected for this opinion.

Why more respect. They have not done anything to
deserve more respect.
If you believe the Atheist and Christian Fundamentalist need more
respect from you - go ahead, it is your choice.
I personally would have the same respect for anyone who treats me with respect. And it does not matter to me what they believe in.
Deeds speak louder than words.

If a person shows respect, they deserve the same in return. If a person is disrespectful... they deserve the same in return. It doesn't much matter to me what religion, or lack of, a person has. Though it does tend to get annoying when someone claims they follow a loving god and then treats someone like crap based on difference of belief.

Well then shouldn't the Christian who is 100% positive in their beliefs also get more respect rather than being lumped in with people who only claim Christianity rather than practice the religion itself? I know plenty of atheists who don't know what to believe. So rather than prusue the interest of figuring out what is real, they simply chose to believe in nothing.

LOL, I went to mass one day with my wife... Their parking lot was a small one so everyone always double parks on Sundays. One day this lady with a beamer forgot the keycode to her alarm. She was the first car of ALL the cars, so no one could leave. She was soooo embarrassed. But the best part was the people stuck leaving from church. They were all cussing at her!!! I was the most hilarious ironic thing ever... My wife didn't find the humor as I did.

I'm sorry you met those Christians. Unfortunatley, people think that they can go to Heaven by saying that they are Christians but don't know one thing about how to live as a Christian. Believe me, there are some of us Christians who actually follow our religion.

I think everyone deserves respect....atheists, christians, jews alike. The people I believe that do not deserve respect are people that are in there right mind but commit murders, rape......

Nope. The main principle of the physical universe is that matter cannot be created or destroyed. So, even if every religion on earth is wrong (and they very well might be) it's stupid to think that there is nothing out there.
