Technically you are a new person every 7 years but in the "ancient past" you were required to go thru rights of passage in order to come out as a brand new person. Thus as someone prepared for their next right of passage they were nervous and anxious, and the Gaelic word for this is CLOSE, in sound, to the word itch. Therefore we have seven year ITCH - although it should be seven year nerves.

To me it means that the first 7 years of marriage are usually the hardest as you both start living as a couple which can be quite difficult at times. Basically if you can remain married after 7 years you have a good chance of staying that way. Sadly I've been involved in two very itchy marriages!!... Not going there again!!.

I think it means after a man has been married for seven years he starts to get "itchy" for other female friends if you know what I mean.
