Ive taken a fortnights worth of sleeping pills, the first 2 got me off, and the rest its just been the same, wide awake, going crazy until the postman comes.

How can i swith my brain off at night??

Is it common not to sleep with sleeping tabs???

Because you have taken so many your body has a tolerance to them, the same as alcohol/drugs. Stop them for a while and persevere and you might sleep better. The same is a condition where people become addicted to pain killers, if they don't take them they get pains!! eg Paracetamols, the body craves the paracetamols so when you stop taking them the pain comes back. It is a withdrawal symptom. Stop the drugs and after a few days the symptoms disappear.

Were you taking over the counter sleeping pills or ones perscribed by a doctor?

The over the counter sleep aids like unisom are simply benadryl repackaged. If you look at the active ingrediate you would see the similarity. IF you don't get sleepy taking benadryl you most likely will not sleep well on OTC stuff.

If they are pills perscribed by your doctor that id diffrent. Some sleeping pills work on your brain chemistry and if you chemistry is off they may not be doing the job they are supposed to.

I would suggest taking Melatonin. You can buy it almost anywhere you can purchase vitamin C or other supplements. It stimulates the production of seratonin which will not only help you get to sleep but to stay asleep when you get there.

If you don't want to take meds try looking up the term sleep hygiene or click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_hygiene

All in all, if you haven't already you should talk to your doctor. Not sleeping well can lead to or be a symptom of other physical and mental problems.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Sleeping pills can make it worse. If I take them I'm groggy all day and awake at night.

Make sure the room is cool and dark, try to go to bed and get up at the same time everyday. If you can't sleep get up and read or watch something boring.

You have to get the sleeping pill garbage out of your system, which could take awhile. I also sleep better if I have a glass of milk and a piece of toast before going to bed but that's not supposed to help.

Do the pills work for a couple of nights and then stop having any effect? Are you taking hypnotic sleeping pills? If not you should ask the doc for pills that will give you REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, these allow you to dream and dream sleep.is deep sleep. Most physicians try you on very weak pills to start with, you need to demand something stronger and only take them twice a week. Some where, perhaps in your sub-conscious mind, you are worried, try to find this worry, money or partner, something from your past or some unfulfilled desire? Try slowly counting backwards from one hundred, whilst descending into a deep dark hole down a circular staircase, this should be done slowly, the numbers, softly coming into your mind as you walk slowly down that spiral staircase. This is a method I used to teach and it worked for some, I designed it for myself, I'm a 20 year insomniac. My co leagues used to tell me, "heal thyself physician."

I have a similar problem, but I don't take sleeping pills on principle. Not fool proof, but what has helped me is to go to sleep later than normal when I feel really tired (in my cae 12:00 midnight rather than 11:00pm). The other advice is also good - go to bed same time every night, cool room, hot milky drink before bedtime, relaxing hot bath, etc.

I've read in several places that eating or sniffing raw onion a few minutes before you go to bed is an effective folk cure. Some swear by keeping a piece of onion under your pillow but that doesn't sound very pleasant. Try keeping a half onion on your nightstand in an open jar...it can't hurt and it's really cheap!

I was interested and wanted to answer ur question because i once had the same problem. i am a medical student just finished my 2nd year. it was a difficult semester had to study alot, new room partner, new friend and new issues and problems, had to wake up early in the morning all was tring and burdensome. And it kept me awake all night and even lead to heart pains and burns as if my heart was tearing apart but it wasnt so. it was just that i had a lot of issues in my mind and they became burdensome and my mind remained awake cause of worry, discontented and alot of issues. so what was wrong ...
Problems:
1. unanswered questions
2. unsolved issues
3. Taught i could do all things by my streght

Solution:
And unanswered questions becomes a burden in our heart. Begin to seek wisdom about issues (talk to elderly people, ask questions till u have peace in ur heart and read books "the truth will set u free"(Godily wisdom) Human Jokes or ideas wont help but confuse.
Lay all ur burdens to God thru pray. The lord said "... Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and i will give u rest..."
That will be the absolute answer.
You call do all things through Christ who strenghtens u. God loves and with him all things are possible. will love

I take:

50mg diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl)
900mg valerian root
10mg melatonin

and I sleep like a baby.

If you have ANY health conditions or are on any medications talk with your physician or pharmacist before you begin taking any of these, because there's a possiblity they could interact with your condition(s) or medication(s).
