I need a hedge for the side of my house that faces our neighbors. They have a wire fence around their house and they have covered it with "no trespassing" signs facing all directions. They are not friendly and think everyone is out to get them. There are so many of these signs that it is very ugly to look at. They also have half a dozen cars parked on their front lawn on any given day. Financially right now a wood fence is out of the question for us, but I was thinking of planting a hedge. Any ideas?

A box hedge would work well, pick something that would stay green in the winter.

In my opinion, planting a hedge is polite because basically it is a srub and if you put up a big fence it tells your neighbor to keep out just like he is doing to you and would just make matters worse. Think of the hedge as landsscaping.

It is fine to plant a hedge even if your neighbor's yard is not an eyesore. Its good for sound barrier as well.
you may wish to refer to it as a Privacy Hedge (i.e. give the impression you don't want people looking at YOU instead of commenting on the state of your neighbor's yard.)
Make sure you know where the real property line is.

With neighbors like that, who cares about etiquette? I'd plant the hedge and be done with it! My mom has a neighbor who has a trashy yard, but not the same kind of trashy as your neighbor's yard...this lady is one of those people who just can't say NO to a garden statue. She has bird baths, gnomes, bird feeders, St. Francis, etc., as well as about a billion plants. It's horribly tacky. Too much of a good thing... You know? My mom had to have the hedgerow approved through her neighborhood association, but they didn't have a problem with it. Your best bet would be to get something that grows relatively quickly...boxwoods, ewes, forsythia, etc.

Go for the box hedge but make sure that you plant the hedge inside your property line. Your neighbours can do or say nothing.

As long as its on your yard, facing your house, it sounds like a great plan and good luck. I grew up going to my grandparents house who had hedges and I still love hedges because of that. So good luck.

yep, plant the hedge and make sure that it is inside YOUR property line so they won't chop them down
call the city about any municipal ordinances that may deal with parking cars ON the front lawn.

Rose of Sharon are fast growing and propagate easy.As for the cars , I would call the zoning commission and you will most likely find he is in violation of more than one zoning ordinance. I had a friend who kept cars in his yard till the zoning commissioner sent a letter stating if they were not moved in thirty days the fine would be one hundred dollars a day after the thirty days.

Go for it! As long as it's not on any part of their property, because if that hedge grows over to their yard, they have a right to cut that part off.....

i agree. a hedge would work well. Be careful how close you plant them to the fence. If they are really unfriendly you dont want them chopping of them
