When my son hits I grab his hand and sternly say NO HITTING. When he throws a toy he gets it taken away. If he were to draw on the wall, make them clean it themselves. My mom did this with me and I never did it again. When they break a toy on purpous make THEM throw it in the trash. If they throw themselves out of a chair and they are not hurt don't coddle them. If they throw their food on the floor make them pick it up. My almost 2 year-old son was throwing food on the floor and is getting better about not throwing food because he knows that he will have to pick it up.

I love answering questions like this but my answers will vary greatly depending on the age of the child. My experience is with preschoolers so I'll give it my best shot. Keep in mind, my answers are only appropriate if the child is between 2 and 5 years old.

A child who hits, throws a toy, draws on walls, or breaks a toy on purpose:

If you've determined the child truly understands the behavior is wrong, "time outs" done correctly can be very effective. The time out should be in a boring, quiet place and should last one minute for each year of the child's age AFTER they stop crying. I used a gate in a corner since my kids would just keep getting off the couch or wherever else I put them in the beginning. The key is to be consistant. Do it every single time the behavior occurs and you will see an improvement quickly.

Purposefully falling out of a chair?

Do nothing. They're only risking hurting themselves. One day they'll suffer a bad bruise and learn their lesson

Throwing food on the floor?

I would temporarily stop allowing them to feed themselves. If they're old enough to understand, tell them you'll feed them like a baby until they can learn good table manners

Just a footnote:
All of the behavior problems you listed, indicate to me that the child in question has trouble communicating his or her desires and is frustrated. If his or her verbal skills are underdeveloped, many parents have success with sign language.

well some of these things depend on age, of course you are not going to impose a consequence on a baby who dropped their food. but if they are old enough to understand consequences then here are my ideas. i like to think of consequences in terms of what would happen to an adult doing the same thing. if an adult was to hit someone, he may be sued for assault. so i would make the child "pay" the other child, whether it be in a nice deed, doing chores for them, giving them one of their toys, etc. hmm what would happen to an adult that threw something? well if it hurt anyone or damaged something they would have to pay for it. so the same consequence applies to a child throwing a toy. if they threw it at a person, but didnt hit them, i would still give the same consequence. but if it was just thrown, not at anybody or anything, i dont think there should be a consequence. if an adult drew graffitti on a wall they would be fined, possibly forced to cover it up or clean it. so i would make the child clean the wall. if a child breaks a toy on purpose, that brings its own consequence because they no longer have that toy. so put the broken toy in the trash and that would be the end of it. the consequence will come on its own when they start missing that toy and you wont buy them another one. if they purposely fall out of a chair, i would just ignore it because obviously they are doing it for attention, so if you ignore it, the behavior will stop, no consequence needed. for a child who throws their food on the floor, well that is less food that they get to eat, so they may go hungry. dont give them any more food no matter how much they complain. and of course make them clean it up.

Some one needs to set up some rules and say I DON"T THINK SO. You make them say I'm sorry when they hit and you take something away from them. Throws toys, take them away, Draws on the wall, clean it off. Breaks toys on purpose gets no more. Falls out chairs on purpose let them lay on the floor and look stupid, throw your food on the floor you pick it up and don't get anymore. Sounds mean, but some needs to let this little smart thing know you are not putting up with that stuff. You don't have to beat a kid to get the point across.

!I'm old school ....and I spank bottoms.
2. They would not have any toys to throw ...because I would take them away.
3.Just give them a bucket, soapy, hot water and a towel...and tell 'em to get to scrubbin' !!!!
4.Take all of their toys away...and do not replace the broken toy.
5.Make them sit on the floor from now on ...they won't be able to fall too far ...lol....I am serious though.
6. They get no dessert...and they have to clean up everything that they threw off of their plate.
I don't know if you will think that my methods are natural or logical ...but I must say that they have worked very well for me ...so much so that when my 3 children and I are in public places many people have complimented me on the behavior of my kids . My eldest boy is 11yrs., My second eldest boy is 9yrs., Last but definitely not least..my little girl is 4 yrs. going on 44 ...lol
So true I'm no expert on behavior ..but what I do works for me..and I hope maybe it will work for you too...Good Luck and God Bless.
