There are many strands of evidence proving that the Bible really is God’s Word. Each strand is strong, but when all are taken together, they are unbreakable. A few of these strands follow:

Only the Bible Survived: More than 3,000 years ago, when the writing of the Bible got started, Israel was just one small nation among many in the Middle East. Jehovah was their God, while the surrounding nations had a bewildering variety of gods and goddesses. During that period of time, other nations too produced written works that reflected their religion and their national values. All these Middle Eastern works, however, met a common fate. They were forgotten, and even the languages they were written in became extinct.

Science has not proved the Bible wrong: It is widely held today that the Bible is unscientific. But we have to remember that the Bible is a book of prophecy, history, prayer, law, counsel, and knowledge about God. It does not claim to be a scientific textbook. Nevertheless, when the Bible does touch on scientific matters, what it says is completely accurate. Consider, for example, what the Bible says about our planet, the earth. In the book of Job, we read: “[God] is stretching out the north over the empty place, hanging the earth upon nothing.” (Job 26:7) Compare this with Isaiah’s statement, when he says: “There is One who is dwelling above the circle of the earth.” (Isaiah 40:22) The picture conveyed of a round earth ‘hanging upon nothing’ in “the empty place” reminds us strongly of the photographs taken by astronauts of the sphere of the earth floating in empty space.

Prophecies that came true: Humans cannot foretell the future with any certainty. Time and again their efforts at prediction fail miserably. So a book of prophecies that did come true has to attract our attention. The Bible is such a book. In it, we read of many prophecies, too numerous to recount here, that were made sometimes hundreds of years in advance, and that came true in astounding detail.

If you look for flaws, of course you’ll find them. But if you study the Bible with an open mind, you will certainly learn volumes.

"The Bible is the most unique book that has ever been written." It took over 1500 years to write the Bible. It is written by over 40 authors covering 40 generations. It was written on three separate continents, and has three separate languages: Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic. Furthermore, it speaks on hundreds of controversial topics with unity. Now, let us think about this. Over 40 different people from all walks of life: peasants, prophets, kings, shepherds, fisherman, doctors. They are writing different styles of literature: poetry, history, law, letters, biographies. Totally different types of literature. When you put it all together, on those hundreds of controversial topics, the Bible speaks in unity. How in the world could you ever do that? How could you concoct that? You can’t, but God can!

The Bible isn't like other books. Yes, it can be used as an archological source book, or a history book, but it is much more than that. This book has predictive prophesy. In the OT there are 48 major predictions about the Messiah, let alone the hundred or so others. How he would die, how he would live, where he was born, etc. Jesus fulfilled all of them. The odds of someone fulfilling any eight of these prophesies by accident is a hundred million billion to one. This book tells the future, and is right about it. Only God could do that.

We know that the Bible is the word of God because Jesus Himself used the Holy Scriptures. He referred to the book of Deuteronomy and Jonah, the Psalms and many other books. The Apostles also referred to books from the OT so we can know that they are genuine.
When the Bible was complied and it was decided which books to include and which to leave out. They decided upon two things.
1. Did Jesus quote from the Scriptires?
2. Did the book have apostolic recognition?
If the answer is yes then these books were included, if neither if then the books were left out and considered as fakes.
The Protestant Bible has 66 books.
The Rcs however add books to their teaching which include Bel and the Dragon, and other such fanciful titles.
I know that the King James Bible is the inerrant word of God.
Other religions teach all sorts of fanciful teaching that is totally man made.

While a student at Valparaiso University, I was priviledged to have classes taught by the late Prof. Rast. Prof. Rast spent his summers digging for Sodom and Gomorrah.

He and his interns found evidence of a horrific event that took place in a context similar to what is written in the Bible. There is remarkable archaeologic evidence to support some of what is written in the Bible.

I am an imperfect Christian and I'll be the first to admit it. I'm not a big Bible study guy. I believe and know in my heart and that's pretty much where I leave my faith.

But our culture is surrounded by Christians who look to the Bible for each and every answer and really do believe it is the word of God. I certainly want to respect their beliefs, even if I don't necessarliy agree.

As a child I knew God existed and always felt his presence. I didn't need a Bible to confirm that for me and I as an adult, I know God is there, and again I don't need the Bible to confirm that for me.

If it was possible to know, then faith would be pointless.

But while we're on the subject, you see a bridge - steel and concrete - and you have faith it will support you as you cross. You've experienced bridges many times, and they've always worked in the past. Of course bridges have been known to fail. Some people have even been killed having complete faith in the bridge.

The only way to have experiential knowledge of God is to trust Him and follow His leading. Where are you going to find His leading? Well, may I recommend trying the Bible?

Partially by the prophecies in it which have been fulfilled. Additionally by the fact that it contains information that no other publication has and some information that no one could possibly have known. It gives in clear detail the outcome of events that match history and science to support its claims. Example - the Bible mentions the "circle" of the earth, long before men believed the earth to be circular. (Isaiah 40:22)

I don't know if this answers your question or not, but one of the main reasons that I believe in Christianity is that the people who knew Jesus were willing to be tortured to death rather than change their story that they saw Jesus return from the dead.

If the apostles were lying about seeing the resurrected Christ, then why didn't they take back their story when they were individually being tortured to death? Every one of the apostles (Except John, who died a natural death in exile on Patmos), were killed for their faith. Wouldn't a liar recant this story to save his own life?

What did the apostles have to gain by making it all up? What good does fame do for a dead person?

I accept the apostles' story because the witnesses were creditable.

PS: Yes, I have heard the crack about suicide bombers, but the main difference between the modern bombers & the apostles are: (1) the bombers did not see Mommand personally, so they are not eye-witnesses to anything (Unlike Peter, & Paul, who claimed to see Jesus alive with their own eyes and then died rather than take it back); and, (2) the bombers are killing innocent people (others) for their faith, not suffering for it (I assume that blowing yourself up is quick & painless compared with being crucified.).

I agree w/Samantha....
also, I could say "way I was raised" or "because I read it and it works for me."

but, I will just add that our Bible goes back to source documents!
with Socrates there are no copies of proof
Aristotle there are less than ten
Caesar, maybe ten
YET! how many agree with them?

there are at least 6,000 reliable collection of historic documents to prove the Bible, the earliest being 120AD

Nothing invalidates the Bible.
So I suppose, if we were to ask your question, the answer would be:
"By the people who read it." IT changes lives........

WE DON'T - No one knows -- Well in fact some of us know that the book was written by a series of men over many years...a bit like....imagine there was ever only one book of Harry Potter in the world and it was lost several times over a thousand years and people kept on fixing it, rewriting the missing pages and filling in the blanks etc etc....Oh Dear!

Well, nothing wrong with living with a clean conscience, but to be brain washed?! Naaahhhhh

Nobody knows if the bible is the word of God. And about the age of rocks and fossiles it is done by carbon dating, when used wisely and carefully carbon dating is an incredible tool.
