They are really family oriented and educate their children well. They make up a tiny fraction of the population but are one of the richest communities! Their avg per capita income is 10-15000 p/a higher than the rest of american national average! They make for productive americans. Why are they still hated?

Well charming chatty i don't see why you should blame indians for that. You were staying at a days inn maybe you shouldn't be expecting things like a fivestar hotel. If you expect that you should be willing to cough up the dough for that kinda service. Ok his service was not upto the mark and you are assuming that he called you a pig. I wouldn't accept the lip reading argument in general but i'm not here to defend that person. They face sick looks all the time from americans. And by the way why do they need to be respectful to you from the outset. Respect is a two way street my dear friend and from your remarks it looks like you expect them to treat you as something better than themselves. Poor service reflects on the establishment not the race of the people working there!

Like people in any culture or country there are a lot of differnt East Indian groups. I have met various people from India, some are friendly, some are rude, some are arogant, some are humble and any other personality trait you can think of.

On the whole some East Indians are to other East Indians as New Yorkers are to Americans. They give everyone else a bad image. There are Indian men who treat women like mules in public and yell at them and blame them for every thing that goes wrong usually something they should have done but out of laziness made the women do. There are East Indians who walk into a store and expect to be waited on as if they are in a Five star Hotel treated like a VIP. A friend of mine was selling a house and an Indian family came to look at it. Several men standing in a half circle with folded arms gave him insulting lowball bids while the extended family ran through the rooms banging the doors and yelling in Pujabi at the top of their lungs. However,

I have met Indians who are brilliant, spiritual, kind and warm pleasant individuals. I have even met some funny comedian like indians. Some very neat and organized who are an asset in the work place. If you are an Indian, learn why many Americans are offended by arogant New York City americans (I have met high quality New York City Types) and try to learn civility.

American here, and I generally don't dislike Indians or any other immigrants.

Note however that there is a tradition in many places and not just the US to dislike newcomers because they are different (culturally, socially, frequently racially and in religion as well) and because they are seen as competition in the work place. Remember also that new immigrants are often willing to do work that others find unpleasant, which does not add to their social status in the eyes of those already here and many times immigrants will also work for less which makes them unwelcome both as economic competition and as depressors of wages. Those who come and take higher level jobs also face similar criticisms for the same reasons--they take skilled jobs for less and compete with those already here.

Realize that I am not saying these beliefs are entirely true (although I think they can be supported) and I am saying that most Americans come from immigrant stock and have forgotten that at one point their ancestors faced exactly the same prejudices. My own ancestors were either English (and that gave them a pass from most criticisms) and Italians (who did in fact face many prejudices).

Many immigrants also cause more prejudice than their might othewise be, because they tend to group together in ghettos, where a foreign language can prevail, a different religion, different dress and culture--these set the immigrant off from the mainstream in the eyes of the mainstream (immigrants do this for support and for familiar surroundings its natural). So some of this kind of prejudice is a direct outgrowth of human nature and perhaps cannot be avoided.

There is another concept here that seems to be part of human nature--"we paid our dues, now you can pay yours." There are some cities (San Francisco is an example) where any newcomer tends to be ignored, treated somewhat with contempt by the natives, until they have lived there long enough, i.e. sort of established that they are now locals and regulars, not just newcomers. This also seems to be part of the immigrant experience--you are newcomers until you leave the ghetto and go native so to speak.

Its not really hate, its closer to a pressure to conform to the norms of the mainstream. Tribalism if you will--to become part of the tribe and accepted fully, you gotta conform.....time and 'americanization' will cure what you perceive to be hate, at least with most.

Depends where you go. If you go in the middle of no where in USA then Indians get some prejudice towards them. If you go to west coast, you will have NO problem. There are so many Indians there people have come to accept them. Northern California has alot of Indians specifically Bay Area. NYC and NJ also has a sizable Indian community and they are viewed as hardworking people. But out of all the countries besides India I think USA has a better place for Indians.

I have seen what you are talking about, but the anti Indian immigrant movement is not what you would call a big issue.

I think you generally get that type of attitude from the old school, blue collar worker type. I saw it in when I lived in Michigan, car factory workers laid off, but a smart Indian engineer getting paid nicely, they were simply jealous. Fact is that America kids are not being educated properly, they spend to much time on bs and not enough time on the important things like Reading, Writing, Math and Science. So we get a lot of out highly technical labor from countries like India.

I personally don't hate indian immigrants, but I do sometimes dislike that it seems like many businesses are dominated by Indian Immigrants and many of them are extremely rude and arrogant. I get tired of being treated like I am "not as good as".

I have stayed in a number of hotels that were purchased by Indian Immigrants and once purchased the quality of the establishment often went way down. Indians seem offended when Americans say "this is the way it's supposed to be". I was at a hotel where the air conditioning broke and it was 98 degrees outside. This was a Days Inn. The guy kept coming in and I'm sitting there in my pj's with a robe and it's getting later and later. So I ask if I can have another room and he just acts like he doesn't understand english. Problem is I can read lips because I am partially deaf and later I see the guy (2am air still not running empty rooms but they won't give me another) saying to another that he thought I was a pig. And laughing at me, I never said anything rude or disrespectful to him, I just wanted air conditioning. I was there with my husband before checking into a hospital for a life threatening illness and my husband and I just wanted to have a nice night together.

Next day was horrible. They wouldn't give us any kind of refund and were just ignorant. Days Inn took care of it later though within a year the guy was out of the franchise. I have had a number of similar encounters, where I can honestly say I did absolutely nothing and was treated like dirt. Many Indians automatically seem to think all Americans hate them so they get their backs up right away.

I think any immigrant who comes into this country should be respectful. For instance as you brag about how fabulous Indian Immigrants are I can think of several instances where they profitted from me while giving me poor service and treated me rudely. I don't judge all Indians by these few and yet I see nothing but judgement in what you say.

Your own question is your answer.

Unhappiness and fear. Maybe some resentment you see comes from jealousy or some other pain (dissatisfaction with how wealth, educational opportunities and privileges are distributed) and they need scapegoats.

Truthfully, maybe I'm myopic, put I don't see the hatred of indian immigrants -- at least in the SF Bay Area.

I don't hate them. I live right near Little India. They are nice people and I like the food also.

There just are a lot of dumb bigots in this country who hate anyone not like themselves. Hmmm they probably hate themselves also.
