I'm reffering to any government, US, UK, whichever you want to comment on.

If the entire UK switched to energy saving bulbs it would save 20% of total energy consumption and remove the need to build new nuclear power stations. Why don't they just make energy wasting bulbs illegal?

I dopn't think just saying we live in a free world explains it, after all, leaded petrol is banned (is here anyway), as well as many other environmental protection laws.

It's all about the money and ignorance. On top of that, there are people out there who just don't care. Some people would say that they can't afford to spend the extra dollar or two for the more efficient bulbs (even though it may be more expensive to buy the cheaper bulbs).

The same reason the government doesn't ban conventional cars and force everyone to buy Hybrids or electric cars- it just won't work.

You can't just jump to a solution that concerns a whole nation. Time is a factor and so is fair competition. GE invests highly into the development of energy-saving lightbulbs, but it also has a large investment into conventional lightbulbs because they are cheaper to make and more popular to the public.

A ban on conventional lightbulbs would both be unfair to companys who profited solely on those bulbs and it would also cause a flop in the market of lightbulbs.

While you think "conventional lightbulb factories can just switch to energy-saving ones!" rethink that the government would have to pay for the switch of many factories- which would then be unfair to one's that had already changed- so it would inquire paying all factories to create economic stability.

Because the next thing they'll be telling you is what to eat and how much. Trust me, you don't want government telling you that. You give government too much power and they will be telling you all kinds of things you won't like. It's up to the individual to choose what light to use. If you want more people to use energy savers then tell as many people as you can how much money they will save in the long run over heat wasting incandescents. Once they realize how much money they're wasting, maybe they'll take a second look. And please don't give the government any more ideas like this. We've lost enough freedoms already.

Lead petrol is bad for humans who have to breathe the exhaust.

Energy burned in residential light bulbs is 5% of the total. Most energy is used in the industry, as well as for heating, cooking and AC.

good idea thinking of saving energy but remember bulb industry is a long time industry and it help us to create our live's easy a long time ago. banning this industry might hurt a lot of people who the other ways around help us when we had no choice of any alternative stuff to use. Therefore i will leave this matter to the end user.therefore bulb has been a part of our life from the riches to the poorest of all human race so give the creadit and they need to have it now.

this is because this can lead to riots, which can topple the government easily. people who don't want to use them will protest and eventually become violent. Another thing is that energy saving bulbs are more expensive to make which makes it more expensive to buy...
It's like forcing all gasoline powered cars to move to biodiesel cars... won't happen in the near future, now will it??

Because you live in a free world and can buy what you want. Its light blubs, not cocaine. Plus, why don't you look at the insane waste of fossil fuels, something that can't be replaced.

It doesn't harm anyone to waste energy, unlike stealing and murdering do, sadly. I would seem silly to ban standard light bulbs because they don't ahrm anybod when used.

I think the govt. could make them tax deductible so more people would use them. they say if every family in the u.s. would replace just one bulb with a fluorescent it would save as much energy per year as eliminating 1,000,000 cars.
