I bought a 200 round bulk pack of Federal's 50 grain JHP .223 remington ammunition. It shot fine, however the headstamp says LC 05, and has the NATO circle cross. Is federal picking up after the troops at target ranges and reusing them, or what? Also, do you know if this stuff is berdan primed? I don't want to buy any more if this is the case.

It's the American Eagle line of Federal.

The standard NATO ball round 5.56mmx54mm (commercially known as the .223) is commercially produced by several companies in the US. The brass is picked up on the ranges and sent back the the Manufacturers to be re-used. So buying a commercial round for the .223 and having NATO on it could mean re-used brass, or it could be surplus. A gentleman that I know purchases .308 NATO surplus to hunt with. As for the primer, I don't know enough about it to answer the second part of your question.

Most likely it's boxer primed, shine a light down an empty, if it has one hole, it's boxer, 2 holes is berdan. The only berdan primed .223 ammo i've seen was Wolf ammo.(Steel case) Most any modern brass cased .223 is boxer primed.Since you bought a bulk pack you most likely got factory reloads. I shoot surplus south african 5.56 in my bushy, it's much cheaper than factory reloads and it's armor piercing. American eagle is factory new ammo, why it would have a LC stamp is a mystery.
