I bought a 200 round bulk pack of Federal's 50 grain JHP .223 remington ammunition. It shot fine, however the headstamp says LC 05, and has the NATO circle cross. Is federal picking up after the troops at target ranges and reusing them, or what? Also, do you know if this stuff is berdan primed? I don't want to buy any more if i will have to bore out the primer..

It's the American Eagle line of federal.

American Eagle is Federal Ammunition. As for your .223 ammo since it is a bulk pack they are probably factory seconds from their military production line. It probably didn't pass military standards but was within SAAMI specs. That would explain the NATO headstamp.

the LC on the head stamp stands for the Lake City arsenal which is the largest supplier to the military. The 05 is the year it was made. The cases are new never fired. Most of the berdan primed ammo is foreign, and this is USA made so its the boxer primer. This is some of the best plinking ammo around. IMO

Most likely it's boxer primed, shine a light down an empty, if it has one hole, it's boxer, 2 holes is berdan. The only berdan primed .223 ammo i've seen was Wolf ammo.(Steel case) Most any modern brass cased .223 is boxer primed.Since you bought a bulk pack you most likely got factory reloads. I shoot surplus south african 5.56 in my bushy, it's much cheaper than factory reloads and it's armor piercing. American eagle is factory new ammo, why it would have a LC stamp is a mystery.

The .223 is known as the NATO round. Maybe they just stamp the NATO cross on all the common .223 ammo now.

if you shot the ammo you know it is not berdan primed already.

federal makes ammo for the military. LC is the head stamp for the match ammo. 05 year it was made.

they use the same spects for the commerical ammo so they just have to change the packaging to sell it to the public.

it's good ammo.

Federal is a military contractor and has been for 70 some years. It wasn't factory seconds they are surplus or over runs. They 100% will be non-corrosive.
