Have you been in therapy? What things did you like or dislike about your therapist? I am a social worker and have many clients, but I would like to hear from you...what worked for you?

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy helped me the most... but more traditional therapies have helped too....

a good therapist is a good listener....who gives good advice but doesn't solve all your problems for you...... a good therapist is nonjudgmental......

i had one therapist that always tried to hug me when i left... i even had to duck under his arm once to get away... he was totally inappropriate..... so..no touching unless the client asks for a hug or something....

good luck!

A good therapist needs to be empathetic with the client, be willing to address the difficult issues, and have sufficient training to be effective. A good therapist also needs to be able to leave the work in the office! The profession has a very high suicide rate. A good therapist addressed the client's NEEDS.

Someone who truly helps, and doesn't give you ideas you've heard a thousand times before. Or, if you've heard of the idea, practice it in (or out of) the office.

Example: My therapist was discussing mindfullness with me. I sighed, thinking I've read about this a thousand time. But then we went outside and actually did it, practiced it, and that stuck with me.

Also, don't try to force your viewpoints (about religion, for example) on your clients. I had a therapist who told me I just needed to get married and have a few kids, and everything would be fine. I never went to see her again.

Good luck.

Well if you are a real social worker then maybe you can tell me something. I was going to a therapist and had been goin for about 6 mo. once a week. like i said I WAS goin to her not anymore. One day i want in for my weekly thing and when i got there she called me back and we started talking like always. Then i see out the window a police car and an ambulance. And then she said you are goin to the hospital she got a Cort order for me to go. That was back in March of this year and Ive not been back since. Why did she do that I told her that i was going to see a Dr. for the meds. she wanted me on but she coulden Waite. Now I can't trust any of them because of what happened to me and I know I still need help but I WILL NOT GO SEE ANYMORE OF THEM.........Can you tell me why it haves to be like this for me????
