I've never heard of a customer tipping a cook! Usually the waiter will tip the busboy, the bartender, the host, etc... It's customary to tip your hairdresser, aesthetician, nail person, etc... You don't have to tip the Starbuck's people but they are grateful if you give them your extra change. It's not like they're making big bucks or anything. I've never heard of tipping the trash collector! I've heard of tipping the mail carrier but it's a voluntary thing not an expected one. Bonuses and gifts are not expected. It's something you do if you can afford it and want to do it. Btw? Where are you getting a $12 haircut? And yes, the hair stylist is my friend. After going to her for 6+ years we have become friends! Adding: Well there's no "Great Clips" in Los Angeles there's Supercuts and they are only good for buzz cuts... either way they are still more than $12. I seriously doubt my hairstylist makes $25K a year... without tips. She pays rent for her chair so she doesn't get an hourly wage. Her income is dependent of how many clients she has during the week.

As a supercuts employee, I would hope to see a minimum of $3. To be honest, anything less is rude. We are every bit as educated and licensed as any other stylist. I have heard many people say that they do not tip due to the fact that we are paid by the cut. NOT TRUE. Even if we were, a tip is feed back. I start to worry if I see less money in my tips. I will wonder if something was wrong. By the way, if you are not happy with your cut, and you told the stylist (assuming that they tried to change it and were polite and not offended) DO NOT TIP. Even though tipping is expected, it is still a reflection on how your service was.

Depends on the raport you have with the sylist...and how good they cut your hair.
Anywhere from $2 to $5
I get my nails done, and a colour change is $5.00 and a fill is $14.00...but my manicurist knows I barely have enough money to go ...and to buy the gas to go...so I never tip her...and she loves me to DEATH. If I had the money I'd give her $2 for the 1st one, and $5.00 for the fill. I NEVER tip baristas....they get paid better than I do...and no one tips me. But, at restaurants I tip WELL. At Denny's I tip $1.00...(per person). At a upscale restaurant (above Olive Garden---that would be $2.00 per person)...an upscale one would be like good food, good service, good ambivance..($19.95 a plate minimum)...I tip between 15% and 20% of the bill, depending on the service.
Jeeeeeezzzz this was just about a haircut. But, tipping is an interesting subject. I hope I'm not the only one who elaborated.

If you request a specific stylist every time, then 3-4 dollars. But if you just walk in about 2 dollars.
