Open Office has an extremely good free to use and distribute product at http://www.openoffice.org
It contains programmes fully functional in Word-processing, Database, Spreadsheets, Drawing and Presentation. It looks and feels like Microsoft Office and can even make PDF's

If money is the issue, I'd suggest getting OpenOffice instead:
http://www.openoffice.org/
It is 100% compatible with Microsoft Office and is entirely free. Microsoft is the only seller [see: monopoly] of Office, so they set the price and there's pretty much nothing to be done about it.

If you require office, you can buy a student/teacher copy which will provide 3 licenses to use on machines within your household. It can be bought in most supermarkets these days for about £70.
If you get any troubles with it, I can send you a copy of Office Pro with Enterprise License which will cover it. Contact me if you need further assistance.

You may check with microsoft's website. Everytime they are near done with a new one, they release a beta, which works almost perfectly and is free. I got my microsoft office 2007 like that. Works perfectly. I dont know if they have stopped that though.

Try to use OpenOffice: http://www.openoffice.org/
It is free office software similar to Microsoft Office. Just make sure to always save to Microsoft's format (you choose it below the name of file when saving). However it is NOT fully compatible with Microsoft's product (ex. you can NOT view comments).
If you have to have Microsoft product, go to eDirectSoftware: http://www.edirectsoftware.com
They have very cheap software and offer great service.
