I live there and disagree that we, as a town, are arrogant. The whole town is now geared to tourism with little thought for it's residents, but hey I'm not here to whinge.
It's a beautiful old city, steeped in history, with very well preserved buildings (despite Hitlers best efforts), although I must agree that it is absurd to charge to enter the cathedral, but it is worth it if you are a medieaval freak.
Just visit, You'll love it.

A few years ago I took a study holiday based at the University of Kent. Learnt a lot about Canterbury and its history. Got the chance to see other SE England towns as well such as Rochester, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Hastings and Deal.

Yes. I liked it a lot, it has a very medievel feel to it, really old building and pubs. Also, the Cathedral is very beautiful interesting and old. You can stand where Beckett was murdered, and see how the stone stairs were worn down by the pilgrims crawling on their hands and knees.

I am a history nut -- and really like places like Canterbury.

yes I went there a few years back, it is very historical and quite a nice place to visit for the day, lots of shopping near the cathedral but I found it very expensive, like any attraction in the UK its costs to even look around the cathedral. There were lots of tourists around the area, loads of french schoolkids too.

Great little English town, very old English stuff. That Cathedral of course, colleges, small street. Most enjoyable and not far from London.
