My back doctor is recommending I see one as he believes I will deal with pain for the rest of my life. Before I spend my hard earned dollars (I have no health insurance) I need to know if they are truly effective.

I went to a psychologist for six months for depression that stemmed from my chronic uncurable painful condition. He helped me to learn how to focus on good things, and not the bad. I still have pain, and most of the time can handle it pretty well, but I do have bad days now and then.

He taught me a strategy called "mindfulness" a type of meditation where you try to focus on what is happening right now. Like "right now" I am not in as much pain, etc. You can learn more about mindfulness at the following link. The mindfulnesshelped me a lot more than my shrink did. But you may want to do what your doctor recommends, at least for a few weeks.

I am sorry not to have an answer but I am going to watch carefully what other people tell you. I have chronic migraine. It is severly debilitating. There is truly nothing I have not tried and think it will be with me all my life.
By the way, there is practically no insurance out there that a good therapist will accept. At best, if you had insurance, you'd get 50% of what the insurance thinks the doctor should be charging, and only after a deductible, and only up to a certain amount.

He/she will not "cure" your pain but will give you tools to mentally control your pain level and how to cope with the pain. Do you trust the advice of your back doctor? It can help you but only if you are open to the experience and work with the advice given otherwise save your money. There is alot to be said about accupucture also. If you live in a bigger city, you may be able to go to a college of massage that also teaches accupuncture. Also, look up clinical trials in your area. You may be able to get free treatment and in lots of cases even get paid. Good luck to you. Chronic pain is very hard to deal with.
