depends if you want crowded or secluded. A few years ago I went to Dorset and found a beautiful beach in a place called Christchurch, I was lucky with the weather and it felt like I was in the Mediteranean, Bournmouth and Poole can be incredibly crowded and Brighton has horrible cobbles, Swanage also great for families.

Whitley Bay has the most wonderful sandy beaches and even if you go in summertime you will find them empty. The country side around there is wonderful and the beaches are clean.

I'd recommend a soft one, so you don't hurt your hand too much .
Why do you want to hit English beaches anyway ? Are you Scottish ?
