I'm babysitting my little brother Vincent right now, and he's very sick. He has a fever of 100.9 degrees, but he feels like he's cold. He had a really long nap earlier today yet he's still exhausted. Because he felt so cold, I put a light blanket on him, gave him some children's Advil, put a cold cloth on his head and took his temperature. He feels really sick but he hasn't vomited yet. Is this a stomach flu? Does anybody have any suggestions or tricks that might help him to drop his temperature or make him feel more comfortable? Please answer..

Excuse me? Do you really think you should be looking for urgent medical advice on Yahoo Answers?

A fever of 100.9 for a child isn't that bad and certainly does NOT call for emergency action. Fever and chills happen with kids all the time

Everything you've done so far is correct. Make sure he keeps sipping water or some juice. If he was burning up, I'd say to put him in a lukewarm to cool bath, but since he feels cold, a cool cloth on the head and a light blanket is perfect.

What has he eaten today? Is he old enough to tell you if he's gotten into something he shouldn't have? Food poisioning or regular poisioning is a possibility, but given how mild the symptoms are, I'm not terribly worried. But if you are that worried, call an adult you know and get him or her to come over and check.

When he vomits, he will feel better. The vimiting ejects everything from the stomach that colud be causing his illness, chances are it's either the stomach flu, or food poisoning. Depending how sick he is, if he hasn't vomited within 4 hours of showing sickness symptoms, it's the flu and there is no cure for the common flu - it's a virus, and there are no cures for virus', only time and sleep.

Because it's most likely the flu, then there isn't anthing the hospital or ER can do. People rely too much on medical physicians. Keep him hydrated with water, or water based juices, like powdered drinks you mix with water.

Do not do any of the follow before you contact your mom or dad, he might be allergic to some medications that you don't know of.

I usually alternate with Children's Tylenol and children's Motrin every 3 hours. Make sure you read the label and follow the instructed dosage for his age. and if that does not work, then you need to take him to the hospital. Usually it's either a bad sore throat or a cold. lots of fluids and soups would help too. Hope he feels better. My son just got done with a fever that was 100.3 over 2 days.

Has the Advil helped with the fever? If not give him another age appropriate dose, keep him covered and have him drink water so he doesn't become dehydrated. If his fever doesn't break or goes up get him to a Dr. He's tired and feverish b/c his body is fighting off something. Keep him comfortable and let him sleep.

You've done everything you can at this point. You have to make suer he drinks plenty of water or juice, even if he doesn't want to. He just needs rest to get better right now. Make sure he doesn't eat any sugar, ok? His fever isn't high enough that its dangerous, he's just fighting off a virus.

You are a good sister to be taking care of him. I'm sorry there isn't an adult there to help you.

Contact the child's parent immediately. Never babysit without information on who the child's doctor is in case of emergency. Let the parent decide what should be done. If you cannot reach the parent, call 911 for help and information.

You need to take him to the Doctor ASAP. That is a sign of infection and you will not know if simple or serious unless you get him checked. You can't take things like that lightly. It is better to be safe than sorry....good luck.

Uh, I'd say DOCTOR. Geez, I can't believe they let you babysit a little kid when you don't even know when to get him to a doctor.... give him some CHILDREN'S Tylenol or 1/2 a regular Tylenol, then call the doc, don't get on forums and ask questions....wow....
