Is the cycling on a stationary bike, a vortex kind of cycle, or real biking outdoors? Please edit your question.

If it is stationary, you need some upper body and arms workout - so yes, it is necessary to do more exercises.

If you're trying to burn calories by biking?... I would work on increasing your biking skill level (duration especially). (and maybe do some weight lifting relevant to your biking)

To answer your question.. ... it would probably help your bicycling if you did some weight lifting that enhanced your bicycling ability. Not only are you burning some calories while weight lifting, but it enables you to increase your skills in the muscle department for biking hills and whatnot. Even if you only did some situps and pushups.. it would be beneficial to your biking.

Do you do real cycling or stationary gym kinda cycling.? Real cycling really makes a difference in shaping and toning your whole body - at least it does for me. You're working more on balance. Plus you end up working your upper and lower body.. if you're on a road bike. I think it gives me more of a workout, plus it's fun getting outside. (weather permitting)

If you ride at slower than 10 mph you could only be burning 250 calories in an hour. That means 30 minutes is only 125 calories... that's.. uhhmmm e.. errr.. ONE SLICE OF BREAD! Sickening isn't it LOL

GOAL: So my goal.. if I were you, would be to first increase how far I go.. to one full hour of bicycle riding. Half an hour just gives you enough time to get warmed up and warmed down.

Then I would try to start increasing my speed little by little.

If you ride around 14-15 mph (where I'm at now) then you're talking 600-700 calories burned! Huge difference! That's if you only weighed 130 lbs or something. If you weigh more, like 190 lbs.. that adds another 30% - coz you're working with more weight.. takes more energy.. so you end up burning more calories.

I never thought I would get to 15mph. But i'm doing great now and I love it. It wasn't overnight, but it also didn't take years. It's amazing how quickly our bodies can change.. for the better or worse ! LOL.

I think cardio is the best for weight loss. You can do exercises too and it's not a bad idea. Actually, my feeling.. is that if you exercise.. and you ARE able to turn fat into muscle, you possibly gain weight coz muscle is heavier and more dense. I may be wrong, but I believe that's the way it works. So I do it, but in moderation.

I work on exercise equipment in the gym that helps my bike riding.. legs back and stomach mostly. And force myself to find some steep hill or hills :)

Here's a list I found of general activities and their related calories that they burn. http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist4.htm

I think biking is the best.. I really do. It is the only thing that drops my blood pressure to normal too. It's just awesome!

load bearing exercises are beneficial in weight loss. Push ups or weight lifting could add to the benefit of the cardiovasuclar workout.
