Hiccups have nothing to do with age. It is "a spasmodic periodic closure of the glottis following spasmodic lowering of the diaphragm, causing a short, sharp inspiratory cough" This is the medical terminology. The glottis is a small flap of skin found in the larnyx (voice box).
Hiccups may be caused by indigestion, irritation of the diaphragm, alcoholism, new growth of the pleura, certain cerebral lesions or hysteria or it could be a disturbance of the phrenic nerve. If prolonged, it could have serious consequences. By prolonged, it means over a period of hours.
Antiemetic drugs (drugs that prevent nausea/vomiting), breathing into a paper bag (inhaling carbon dioxide), or a tsp of dry granulated sugar may help. I'm an RN & looked this up in my medical dictionary so I wouldn't miss anything. I hope this helped. Mention this to the Dr the next time you take your child in. He may have some other thoughts on this. My opinion is that it can also be caused by irregular breathing or excitation.
