My hair is DARK brown and VERY long - which makes this even worse for me. I went in wanting very "natural" looking highlights - specifically told her I did not want that chunky/striped look. Well--my highlights are a brassy color with a golden/orange tint and looks like thick lines going down my hair. The sides (by my ears/face) is completely highlighted - none of my natural color is there at all. What is the best way to fix this. I think she knew she did a bad job before I left - told me if in a few days I thought the highlights were too light come back & she will add toner. Needless to say I am afraid to go back to her - but I did pay a good chunk of $. What should I request - toner, lowlights, is there a way for her to go back & foil some of the highlighted areas to darker shades to break up the obvious stripes? I wish I had not lost contact with my old stylist - she kept cards on the color mixture - everything. Long message I know - any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Honey, it is obvious that you were the "learning experience" of some new stylist. The problem with your colour is simply underprocessing. A toner should fix it. However, as to the thickness of the streaks, you need to talk to that girlfriend and tell her that you are not satisfied and that she should give you a partial refund. I would not go back to her, though. Make sure that you tell your friends to stay away from her.
As to the condition of your hair, it will be fine. Remember to stay away from the sun, the pool, and the ocean since they are the enemies of your hair color. Also condition three times per week and use a deep conditioner once per week, specially when you experience dryness. Always rinse with cool water to keep your natural oils in.
Mr. M on bad highlights.

What ever you do don't go back to that girl to fix the problem. If she didn't do the job right in the first place what makes you think she will be able to repair it? A good stylist who knows hair doesn't make mistakes like that. I'm giving you that advice with 25 years of cosmetology experience. What you need to do is ask around... friends, co-workers, people you know and trust if they know a good stylist who is also a good color artist. Word of mouth is always the best way to find someone that's good. If it makes you more comfortable find out a little more about them before you make your decision who you will go to. Be prepared to pay a good price for someone that really knows their stuff. As the old saying goes "you get what you pay for." Also, the cost will be a bit more to fix someone else's mistakes but the end results will be worth it.

Good luck!

DEFINITELY go back in and tell her you are not satisfied with the results. If you don't want her to touch your hair again request another stylist. And yes, she can darken sections of the highlights. I would have a color wash or toner put on over the highlights in a shade that's close to your natural color, or have her put low lights on parts of the already highlighted areas. Good Luck!

i have had this happen to two friends. for both- we picked out a box haircolor (a good brand) that closely matched the natural haircolor and dyed it all over. It brings it back to "normal", but in about 3 days you will see the hilites coming through. it looks more natural.
dark hair tends to turn orange when lightened too much. that stylist should have known that. you have to use a lot of bleach to get blondish highlites, or they will be brassy. One friend has naturally dark red hair, the other dk. brown. They both did this, and now it looks fine and natural. (with highlites). Unfortuneately, the only way to get rid of the highlites she put it, is to let it grow and cut them out gradually. you will probably have to dye your hair several times over the next few years to reallly correct this. I wouldn't go back, you risk the chance of her ruining it somemore.
