Our Jack Russell has always been a growler if bothered when comfortable. We've had a new puppy for three weeks and they are not getting along. The Jack Russell growls and even attempts to bite the new puppy if her territory is invaded. What do we do?

Steps
Plan. Plan. Plan.
Research the realistic compatiblity of your new pet being housed with your old pets. In other words, don't just assume your new African Gray Parrot will be safe from your clawless, lazy fat cat.
Introduce animals slowly and for small periods of time until they are well adjusted to the sight and smell of each other. Use a crate, child gate, or a leash to control the animals during the interactions. Don't be afraid to use a soft muzzle for dogs just to ensure everyone is safe.
Supervise closely. Don't just throw your animals together and go watch television. Pay attention to the way they interact during different times of the introduction.
Be patient. Animals need time to adjust. Especially if your old pet is older and the new pet is a baby. It might take a month, maybe two, before your animals are totally adjusted and can be trusted to be left alone together.

Tips
These same steps can be used to introduce a new animal to your children. Keep children and the new animal seperate until the new pet adjusts to your childs voice and movements. Research age appropriate pets for the age range your children are. And no, children do not take care of their pets. No matter how much they say they will.

Warnings
Some animals will simply not get along no matter how much you try to make them. For these situations, you'll have to make a choice. Can you keep everyone safe and without stress or does your new pet need to find a new home?

Try having them play in a neutral territory.
