How can I fast without getting sick? I am not supposed to drink anything or eat anything during the fast. I don't have to fast for 24 hours, but I can skip 1-2 meals instead. I can't skip the fast because it is very important in my church. Is there some way I can fast without getting sick or leaving my church?

When one fasts, generally it is skipping the breakfast and lunch meals. Of course, it also depends on which meal you eat last before the fast. Normally, during the fast, you should drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration, and to have something to curb the empty feeling you have during a fast. The fact that you are not drinking water could be the reason for vomiting afterward. It may be a sign of dehydration.

Some are called to fast longer than this, but should only do so if they know that this is the case. Usually, a fast will help you become more aware of God's leading in various situations.

I would continue to pray about it, and seek the advice of a mature Christian who knows about fasting.

Well if you are getting sick when you fast you might want to consult your doctor and talk to your pastor about what the doctor says. The other thing is HOW did you break the fast. When I fast for more than 6 days I find that if I eat too much or eat the wrong kinds of food to soon I get sick. Usually best to break a fast by eating a small snack of fruit and nuts or a half a sandwich of peanut butter and jelly with a small glass of milk or juice. Then about an hour later have a slightly bigger meal but do not eat as much as you normally would. Another snack a few hours later and you should then be able to resume your "normal eating" after that. Your pastor should advise the entire church on correct "breaking the fast" tips like this. If you still find yourself being sick consider fasting something other than food. (most pregnant or nursing moms or people with diabetes in my church fast something else like TV or The internet when a "churchwide fast" is called for) Good luck and May God be with you.

Don't eat too much when you stop fasting. Make sure you eat healthy foods after the fast.

With all the obese people in this world it is good to develop self control and will power through fasting.

Don't end the fast with a chocolate bar and a soft drink though. Eat vegetables and fruit to end a fast.

Prepare your body for it. Day before, eat less, more nutrients, lots of liquids. I have gone a week fasting and had no problem, but I mentally and physically prepared for it.
Fasting is a sacrifice but it doesn't need to be food. It could be sex, TV, computer, anything that would hard for you to give up.
There is a Scripture in Isaiah about God choosing the fast for you. He can help you choose which to fast from.

I fasted the other day. I didn't have any problems with vomiting, nor have I heard of this as a problem before.
so, sorry, no answers other than eat a lot of carbs and water beforehand.
good luck.

What Muslims do is they eat right before the fast begins. Eat things such as oatmeal and bannanas, things that stick, and drink things like orange juice and fruit juice as well as tons of water. NO coffee or tea, it dehydrates you. Dates give you energy as well. As soon as the fast is over, DO NOT eat fast or gouge yourself, eat much, but start with something like soup, and do not eat more if you are full. Again drink lots of water.
Good luck.

First, are you fasting for you and God, or to keep up appearences? Anyways, when I fasted over Easter, I didn't vomit. But we are different people. <><

That is just normal for bodily starvations. If you eat you should probably stop vomitting but if you continue to vomit see a doctor.

Fasting is simply denying your body nutrition, and its very important that your body gets food in it. When you don't eat your body is forced to use its "backups" to keep you alive, and without new food these runout quick. The backup is cleaned out of your body by "toileting" ... but instead when you dont eat your body uses these and you get sick from it.
