Yeah, I noticed when I hung out with the Brits, they all were bitingly sarcastic, all the time, and no one had any problem with it. Most Americans are either too straight forward to be or get sarcasm, too disconnected from reality or consider sarcasm rude and antisocial.
I am an American, but I sometimes feel more in my element outside of America.

I have no idea. I live in California, and my conversations are usually dripping with sarcasm, and most people around me get it. So no, sarcasm is not a European thing. Maybe the people who answer your questions just aren't reading close enough or are just really oblivious. It is pretty hard to get sarcasm when it is typed. When I'm sarcastic, I usually do this: *note the sarcasm* You know, make it easy for the idiots out there who don't get it.

It has not occurred to you that, in your dry wit, your vast talent for the comedic, your endless bon motts, that you are the one who is falling short? Perhaps you have not mastered the art of sarcasm to the extent you think? And, it is a well known fact that ONLY Europeans can be sarcastic, be witty, and be entertaining. We here in the States are far too busy saving your butts from every invader who sets sights on your countries. We just don't have time to master all the linguistic treasures you take for granted due to your superior education. IN fact, I think I have just hit upon the real problem...Superiority. And all this time, I thought it was just a German trait...silly me.
PS: is this sarcastic enough? :-)

I haven't seen your other questions, but if you are being sarcastic now, I don't hear it. I do hear a tone of arrogance, however. If you are not familiar with American novelists or American comedians, then the question is ridiculous - of course we know what sarcasm is. I cannot, however, vouch for the quality of all people on Answers.

The British invented scarcasm, and, have come close to perfecting it. Americans (I'm speaking of mature Americans, not the wise a** teeny babies we see a lot of in this forum) have taken the scarcastic remark to a new edge.
You cant judge the American sense of humor based on what you read from someone with only a dozen years experiance with language expressing himself.
To them, the fact that crossing the road is a concept recognized by chickens in novel and ... funny.
(for all you teenies, THAT was scarcasm)

Sarcasm is something which will irritate or insult a person. Some people will not respond, but others will. If you are getting no response I suspect that what you really refer to is "dry humor," which is a type of humor that can fly over person's head. It doesn't necessarily mean he or she lacks a sense of humor. They might be tired, in a poor mood, etc. Sometimes we just-don't-get-it, and for a variety of reasons. It could also be that your humor is EXTREMELY dry, which would mean it would fly over many a head.

Sarcasm can be very difficult to convey in written form, it usually is distinguished by subtle vocal cues when spoken.
I'm American and I'm known for having a "dry" wit and being sarcastic -- in fact it was one trait my ex-boyfriend didn't like about me...

Wow....this question's really deep...HA! I just used sarcasm!
Actually, I think people just get all on the defense today because they want a chance to prove they're right in the way they think and feel. It's all humanity's way of competing verbally.

No, sarcasm is not a European concept only.
Unfortunately, it doesn't come across well in written form.

Oh, no, everyone here on Answers is absolutely brilliant.
Note: I'm American.
Extra Note: See? Some of us are capable of something as simple as sarcasm.
