It's not that hard to get an infection from an ear piercing -- it's a wound just like any other. When you got your ears pierced, the piercer should've given you instructions on how to care for the wound while it healed, which usually means cleaning it daily with an antiseptic. If you haven't been doing that, and if the piercing is now swollen, painful, and maybe even hot to the touch, see a doctor immediately. Infected wounds are serious and you may need a course of antibiotics.

The actual piercing is usually pretty sanitary as long as you get it done professionally. Taking care it, though, your odds can get higher if you don't keep it clean and take care of it. If you take the best care of it and follow the instructions provided by your piercer, your odds will be pretty low that an infection will happen.

If you are piercing yourself or have very sensitive skin, you might get an infection. The chances of getting an infection if you have it done by a pro, in a clean shop, should be very slim.

it depends on the piercing shop you go to...#1 they have to clean vary well their equipment, #2 you must have a strong immune system, #3 you cannot touch your ear for 1-2 weeks after the piercing since it would have suffered

Low as long as you go to a reputable piercer. Make sure they sanitize EVERYTHING that touches you. A relative of mine is a nurse and took care of this girl who had gotten a tongue piercing. It had gotten infected, turned into gangrene, and they had to amputate her entire tongue and part of the lower jaw from her lip to her chin.
