Have you ever had that awkward experience at the barbers (probably not if you're a chick), where you are not sure whether you should make conversation or not? Well that only lasts about ten minutes. Since operations last for as much as several hours, the patient is given an anaesthetic to avoid this awkwardness, and also so that the operating theatre staff can make fun of tatoos, odd birthmarks and deformities without giving offense. no other reason - being sliced up doesn't really hurt; that's just a story they want you to believe.

We find that when we wait until AFTER surgery, the patients complain...
Anesthesia allows surgeons to perform surgery on patients without the patient (1) moving, (2) feeling pain, or (3) dying.
Many advances in surgery were not possible until advances in anesthesia occurred. During surgery, there are many stresses on the system, and anesthesia attenuates that.
We don't ALWAYS use general.... I gave a woman a spinal this morning for a cesarean delivery. She was wide awake and totally pain free, while my colleague cut her open and pulled a baby out. We also do other regional and nerve block techniques, or sometimes just sedation. It depends on the needs of the patient and the surgeon.

A general anaesthetic not only blocks the pain during surgery, it also cuts down on the risk of distress and shock by blocking the memory of the event. Plus it helps the surgeon if the patient stays still.

Well, several reasons, they want to knock out your body so you hopefully don't flail around during surgery. They want to knock out or suppress your nervous system somewhat so you don't FEEL the pain of the knife/scalpel/saw cutting you open. And they want to knock out your brain so you don't A) dream, b) exhibit any nervous twitches, c) wake up screaming from the pain in the middle of surgery, etc. etc.
Pretty much you want to be knocked out as much as they want you to be knocked out. You really don't want to feel the scalpels slicing you open and dissecting you for hours on end. It's badenough when yuo wake up with your tonsils out and feel the fire buring in your throat due to the fact they cut through many layers of skin, tissue, whatever and inflamed the area. Imagin that, only about 100 times worse and longer. Be glad they give anaesthesia.

If you know what a general an aesthetic is, why would you ask a question with such an obvious answer?
