My cat is eight and one big, fat cat,but recently he's gotten very skinny, you can feel his ribs, and now he's started to groan like a pig when he's eating, purring and sleeping, what's wrong? I'm getting quite worried!

I don't want to take him to the vets. He's really happy and content, eating like a pig and as loveable as ever, if I take him to the vets they will probably make me pay £200 and say he's dying anyway and offer to put him down for 50 quid.

I'd suggest you take it to a vet, rather than look for the answer on here!

Taking your cat to the vet is the only way to put your mind at ease. They can only charge you for a consult, it's your choice to pay for any further treatment. It could be something fixable, such as a thyroid problem.
Please keep in mind, this is not normal behaviour and failing to get help for your pet is a form of neglect, whether you can afford it or not.

You need to take him to the vet. If he has gone from obese to so skinny you can feel his ribs, something is terribly wrong. Good luck, though!

Some thyroid disorders can be cured, but many require lifetime treatment. Learn here https://tr.im/v3fh3
For example, sometimes early stage thyroid cancer can be cured by surgery to remove the thyroid gland, but you will need to take thyroid hormone medication afterwards for the rest of your life. Goiters can also be surgically removed and do not always recur after surgery. In most cases, thyroid disorders need treatment over a lifetime. However, with treatment most people with thyroid disorders can live normal, healthy lives.
