I currently attend an Apostolic church. The people who go there, as well as myself, believe in speaking in tongues. I have done so on many occasions. Each time my eyes were closed, I felt at great peace, and my tongues had like lost control but it wasn't bad and sounds were coming from my mouth that weren't just noises but like another language and it just flowed so naturally even though I dont know what i'm saying. Also is there any explanation for shouting, Holy Ghost dancing, things like that. Where the person experiences extreme joy and starts speaking in tongues or screaming or saying Glory or Hallelujah or something and they stomp all around and their arms sometine flail and they like bow, but they never hit stuff or people even though their eyes are closed. Is their a reason how can people run around and not hit stuff with their eyes closed. These people are some of the nicest and holiest people I've ever met. I wanted to know if this is the Holy Ghost or something in the mind.

I have been told that speaking in tongues is 1. first getting the Holy Ghost, 2 praise God the best way (even though Hallelujah's the highest praise), 3 praying for something you don't know bout 4 receiving a revelation requiring interpretation by you or someone else.

NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE. SPEAKING IN TONGUES IS ONE OF THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS THAT SOME ARE GIVEN. "IF" WE ARE BLESSED WITH SPEAKING IN TONGUES, WE ARE TO KEEP SILENCE IN THE CHURCH UNLESS THERE ALSO BE AN INTERPRETER PRESENT, FOR THE CAUSE OF CONFUSION TO OTHERS. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO FAKE AND UTTER THE SAME "SO CALLED" TONGUES OUT OF THEIR MOUTH EVERY TIME THEY SPEAK IN TONGUES, BUT IT IS REAL AND ONE OF THE GIFTS OF GOD. YES! YES! YES! WHEN THE HOLY GHOST COMES UPON US, WE ARE SO FILLED AND OVERFLOWING WITH JOY INSIDE AND OUT THAT IT IS HARD FOR OUR PHYSICAL BODIES TO CONTAIN IT! THUS THE REASON FOR THE OUTBURST OF JUMPING, CLAPPING, PRAISING GOD, THANKING HIM, AND MANY TIMES THE SPEAKING IN TONGUES JUST HAPPENS...IT JUST COMES OUT!!! GLORIOUS FEELING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE SPOKEN IN TONGUES TWICE AND IT HAPPENED SORT OF LIKE YOURS THE FIRST TIME. I WAS SO OVER-JOYED AND MY TONGUE WAS LIKE IT JUST WAS ALL TIED UP AND I COULDN'T GET WORDS OUT LIKE WE SPEAK. THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED, I COULD PLAINLY HEAR AND UNDERSTAND FROM I CAN'T EXPLAIN WHERE THE WORDS AND COULD FEEL MY MOUTH OPENING AND SPEAKING, YET MY PHYSICAL HEARING, EARS WERE HEARING A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE! AWESOME EXPERIENCE! PEOPLE WHO MAKE FUN AND OR DISBELIEVE, JUST PRAY FOR THEM. THEY ARE IGNORANT TO KNOWING GOD AND HIS POWER AND BLESSINGS. YOU CANNOT TELL THEM ANYTHING, BUT YOU CAN PRAY FOR GOD TO BLESS THEM WITH UNDERSTANDING AND WIPE AWAY THEIR IGNORANCE. (IGNORANCE MEANING NO KNOWLEDGE OF)

There are studies about speaking in tongues (Glossolalia), mostly from a psychological and linguistic point of view. I don't have references at hand.

Speaking in tongues have been present in other beliefs that aren't christian, so, they don't believe in the "holy spirit". The Oracle at Delphi is considered the older registered case of this. It's still practiced in some native americans cults in Mexico, for example. In christianity, some people practice is and think it's desirable, others say it's the work of satan, maybe you've been exposed already to the later.

I've seen people practicing glossolalia, as an spectator, I wasn't impressed. I noticed that glossolalia practiced by english speakers sound different than that of spanish speakers, that's suspicious. I understand that you find peace with this, so keep practicing, even though "feelings" are never good evidence to make valid testable propositions.

Here there are a few links about glossolalia. Hope it helps.

babbling

What is the NEW show to indicate you are more in touch than the other people around you.

It is just a show, anyone can do it

Now has anyone hovered over the congregation long enough to be photographed?

Most people in church should be concerned with worship and not showing off some NEW technique that instantly means God touch "me" more.

What cr**!

It is a spiritual gift, that often comes after baptism. Enjoy this beautiful fellowship with God. Words often cannot express things in the Spirit.
It is deifinitely scriptural and a blessing!

Dude, seriously, i don't believe in speaking in tongues. Native Americans used to and still would smoke [i think they'd smoke it] peyote and it would induce speaking in a language that they didn't know. But obviously it was the peyote doing it do them so it's fake. It's even more fake when nothing is inducing it.

Speaking in tongues is speaking another language that you do not understand. It is said to enhance your spirit.

Does science know what biological mechanism is used? Yes. Does science (or anyone) know what is being spoken? Not yet.

You speak in tongues because of belief, not scientific method.

Believe what you want.

I believe you need psychiatric assistance!

In the bible people speaking in tongues were understood by all who heard them - notice a slight difference here?
