You can go to the top of the Empire State Building (34th and 5th.) Rockefeller Center (48th and 5th) is an option: Watch the broadcast of the "Today" show, and then go to the top of 30 Rock. I like the previously-posted Bryant Park idea: lots of people watching, plenty of chairs and tables on green grass so you can chill out and eat. Bryant Park (42nd and 6th) is right behind the New York Public Library...there is always some kind of exibit there.
