I just got my kitten a couple days ago she is 9wks and she is very shy. Her brother had a "cold" said her previous owner and he was in quarentine. the day before the previous owner called me to tell me that they had to take him to the vet because he had "something in his eye". I didn't pay much attention to it at first but after I brought my new kitten home (I named her Yumi) she was showing signs of "something in her eye". It's like an excess of guk that cats sometimes gets in their eyes (I have 2 other kittens) but this is a whole lot and yesterday I just tried to keep it clean because I wasn't planning on taking her to the vet till next week (Pay issue) but today it looks like it's a little swollen and I'm not sure what to do. I'm trying my best to clean it with a clean warm rag but am I doing more harm than good? what should I do? The vet won't be an option till sometime next week.

cleaning it seems to have made things better. I'm still going to take her to the vet at the end of the week but right now it seems like everything is clearing up anyway

One of my three kittens is named Yumi :) cool! Yeah I would just keep it as clean as you can until next week when they can give you some ointment for her eye. If you keep it clean I bet she will be ok for another week. Anyhow, my son named the kittens, Omi, Yumi, and Piff lol gl!

Not sure, but the gunk sounds like it could be conjunctivitis. Don't quote me on it though because my kitten didn't have swollen eyes, but she had conjunctivitis. Her eyeballs were dry, but her tearducts were watering. She now has to have eyedrops for the rest of her life (like once every month or so...when she starts to "wink" at us). Just keep a close eye on it and clean it up as much as you can. In my kitten's case, the gunk would fill up pretty quick. Then, make sure you schedule that vet appointment for next week-earlier the better. And don't worry about the cost of the eyedrops. My vet (who is insanely cheap) charges like $7 and it will probably last a year or two as long as we stay on top of it...so in reality, another vet may charge $15, but again, it lasts for a long time.
My vet also said that because my kitten was a stray, it aided in the disease...many stray cats can get conjunctivitis. Not sure if that is the case for you.
Just keep up the good work and keep your eye on her.

The kitten has a virus. It needs to be seen and treated with antibiotics and eye ointment. Depending on the virus, the kitten CAN lose an eye. If you cannot afford to get it to a vet until next week, you can have real problems!!!!!!!!!! It is also contagous to the other kittens!!! If you cannot get them treated ASAP, then you should not have three kittens!!!!! They are pretty expensive!!! They all need vaccines too!!! Some of these viruses are prevented by vaccinating!!!!!!!!!!

i have had kittens and cats for years. when an eye looks nasty, like you described, i always cleaned the eye with milk on a soft rag. if that didn't help i would take the animal to the vet. the milk cleaning worked 50% of the time.the idea came from a vet i used many years ago.

Keep doing the warm rag (make sure it's damp). That will pull out any gunk. And get Yumi to the vet ASAP. She will need an ointment to put in her eye to get rid of it totally.

the kitten has a cold in his eye. you will have to get antibotic drops from the vet to clear it up. u can clean it with a rag until the vet opens but dont rub too hard or it will make it more red and swollen.

More then likely its either a virus or a cold. Her brother had it and so does she, Kittens go down hill very quickly. She needs to be seen by a vet ASAP. Probably needs antibiotics. if not treated more then likely she will devolope worse cold symptoms and then refuse to eat. So to the vet NOW!

if you really can't get it to a vet, keep doing what you're doing. it is probably a herpetic eye inf which are pretty common among cats, or so i'm told. the vet will probably give you an ointment to put in. if it gets much worse, please find a way to get medical attention for the cat.
