Hezbollah means "Party of God".
They were founded in the early 80s by shiite Muslims in Lebanon and supported and funded by Iran since then.
They are a recognized terrorist organization by the EU and US. Before 9/11 they were even ranked higher than Al Qaeda.

It's amazing how many people are asking this question of one of the best known militant groups in the middle east. Most of the questioners seem to be American, and many of them, like yourself, have previously expressed some definite views on various issues concerning the region, views which appear based on an incomplete understanding of the region. This is not a criticism of you or similar people, but one has to question the quality of the information dished up by the American news media. So wise up, there are now plenty of alternate news services now on the internet. Use them.

they are Terrorist in the western mindset and EU. but in the Middle East they are a Islamic political/military group that originated in1982 to fight Isreali occcupation of S. Lebanon.
However, as years went by this organization has taken responsiblity for many terrorist attacks against Isrealis. They are the largest Shia political group in Lebanon and are supposedly funded by Iran.

It comes from a term in Quran meaning the party of God. It's also referred to the civic resistence in Lebannon.

holy sweet jesus!!! it did not come from the koran!
it breaks down to hizb allah ... literarly party god .. better known as party of god! they've been around since 1982 (when israel first invaded lebanon), and they are the party of the muslim shia in lebanon (and no one else) and because they're shia they have iran's support ... and because they're radical and want to avenge the paletinians/arabs, they have syria's support ... but no other support in lebanon itself because they're too much! they've been responsible for a lot of terrorist acts over the years ... the marine barracks for one (altho no one's sure if they were the ones who actually did it ... and it they did do it, BELIEVE ME they would have no prob bragging). and they are slowly tearing lebanon apart much to the dismay of other lebanese who are powerless against them (they have weapons and better organization)
