Get a crate that will fit him full grown, it should come with a divider. Give the dog just enough room to stand up, turn around & lay down comfortably. Put the food & water at 1 end & his pillow at the other. Make sure to take him outside every 30 mins. They have tiny bladders. Never leave him alone all night and he should never be left in it all day. They need to run & play.

put you puppy in the crate everytime you have him in the house except when you are playing with him. Have water in there and paper (newspaper). Take the puppy outside for lots of walks and train him to go outside. The puppy won't want to go in the crate so be sure you take him outside after you feed him and as soon as you come home each day. don't leave him in the crate for too long of a time.

I started by putting food in the crate and sitting beside the crate while she ate. Don't close the door for awhile let the puppy get used to the environment. NEVER USE THE CRATE FOR PUNISHMENT! Put some toys in the crate and just let the puppy go in and out when it gets used to it close the door and stay by its side -- then let it out -- repeat until you walk away for awhile and return. The puppy will get used to as long as you have some time to spend on the task.

You leave the door to the crate open for awhile and put some toys and stuff in there. After the puppy goes inside, close the door for a little bit. You have to make them comfortable in the crate so they will know that it's a safe spot. When they cry, just leave them in there for awhile and when they stop, you can get it out.

When I crate train I stick them in the crate only when I can't be there to watch them 100% of the time and at night. The best thing to do is put them in the crate with a stuffed animal and try to ignore them, I know it will be hard to do, but if you give them attention everytime they whine then you are enforcing negative behavior.

We crate trained our dog from the beginning. We only put her in there when we are not home for her safety. She is small, and we dont want her to get into anything while we are gone. At first, we just kept putting her in there, told her the same thing every time (Time to go in your house!) and gave her a treat. There was a time when she was a little older (6 months maybe?) where she would make me chase her around the apartment until I grabbed her and put her in there, but I always said the command and gave her a treat. Now, when I am doing my hair in the morning before work (which is the last thing I do before I leave) she sits in her house and waits for me to finish, lock her up, and bring her a treat. When we leave during the day, all we have to say is "time to go in your house" and she runs in there and waits for us to come close the door. Its her little safe place! Just make sure youre consistent with your puppy, and be prepared to encounter the puppy trying to assert itself over you. Thats ok, he will eventually get the message like mine did!

Crate training for potty training? Put your puppy in it whenever you are not playing with it, feeding it, taking it outside to potty. My dog loves her crate, sleeps in it every night. They think of it as their little den, its not cruel or inhumane. Its great! Make sure that before and after feeding, you take him outside to potty and praise him every time he goes in the right spot. I think you're on the right track, doing all this research before you get your puppy! Way to go!

OMG i must tell u this. GET A CRATE ONLY BIG ENOUGH FOR IT TO LAY DOWN, TURN AROUND AND STAND UP. IF THE CRATE IS WAY TOO BIG THEN CRATE TRAINING WILL NOT WORK. AND BE CONSISTENT.

i know this becus i have a beagle and we made a mistake. our crate is way too big for it so she just poops on one side and stays on the other. its bad. she is guna be on crate training for quite a while.

crate training is kind of mean, i think

i'd take the puppy outside every hour instead of crate training, and keep paper beside of him at night

It's pretty simple. Make sure when he has an accident he goes outside first then you put him in his cage. If your at work or asleep make sure he is in there. He shouldn't have any accidents. And if he does he might be marking his territory so don't worry. Godd Luck!!
