Does he have to tell you when he goes? Can you tell him when he needs to go that he can just go? Some children feel more comfortable when they don't need to tell an adult. Stop the rewards, stickers, and treats. He will only come to expect them even after he is trained. Get him a step stool for the adult toilet if he cannot get up there by himself. Put him in clothing that he can easily get on and off without any help. When you see him doing the "potty dance" say "It looks like you need to go to the bathroom." Give it no more attention than that. If he soils himself, hold him responsible for the cleanup. Say, "It looks like you need to change." He can take off the wet clothing, rinse them out, put them in the laundry, clean any wet area, and put on dry clothing. He will soon learn that it is much easier to use the bathroom. This is his issue. He is in control. If you try and control it he will resist. Good luck!

Don't teach him to pee on food! He may one day decide to pee in his cereal bowl. Yuck!

My daughter didn't like the potty so we went straight to the toilet. She had a step so she could go herself. We also had a Kandoo reward book. Each time she went to the toilet, wiped, flushed and washed her hands she was given a sticker. When she was finally dry I gave her the book and showed her it was full. She didn't "come to expect" rewards after this. This was just a form of encouragement. Friend who have boys have had more issues. Some boys like to sit backward on the toilet holding the lid. A cork in the toilet cam help. Get them to aim at that. Makes it fun for them, less mess and also it wont flush away.

I agree with the fruit loops or even cherrios. Give a few to throw in there and make a big deal out of it. Maybe a picture of your mother-in-law in there with him maybe, so he will think grandma is nearby. Have him pick out his own underwear.Just a thought.

My son was hard to potty train. I made a game out of it. I put Fruit loops in the toilet and told him to AIM AND FIRE AWAY.
