Ghosts are seldom tortured souls. They're just discarnate spirits. They exist on an alternate realm that overlaps our own, and sometimes, if we're receptive, we can sense their "presence."

Ghosts aren't typically the "tortured souls" of murder victims. The ghosts of murder victims tend to be stuck where they were killed. Their spirits are in shock and are sometimes too confused to cross over. They don't follow their murderers to jail. If the number of haunted hotels seems numerous, look up statistics on violent crimes in hotels. They're high. My hubby did his internship in college at the county coroner's office and picked up a body at a motel and their records showed that someone had died in almost every room (45 rooms). Most ghosts are people who died suddenly or in their sleep who don't understand that they're dead. They may have unfinished business that they refuse to cross over until it's resolved. You get a lot of ghosts of children because they don't understand death. You find alot of ghosts in older homes b/c more people have lived there over time and there's a greater likelihood of someone dying there. Sometimes you might have someone who died somewhere else (like a nursing home) coming back to their home because the desire to just go home is stronger than crossing over (or if they were senile, they don't understand death and they can only remember home). I hope some of this clears some stuff up for you.

That's a popular belief? I didn't know that. I run a ghost hunting group (more investigations than hunting LOL)
There are so many beliefs about this out there but who really knows.......no one alive that's for sure. I used to believe that they had unfinished business but, what unfinished business can a ghost from 100 yrs ago have? I lean toward the belief that they are spirits of people who are afraid of "final judgment" so they stay here. Maybe they think that if they pass on to wherever, there will be someone with a clipboard sending them to hell. I'd stay here too if I thought that.

I believe in ghosts. Do a random google search. Kentucky, which is where I'm from, we have a place called, "Waverly Heights Saniterium." I'm going there for a tour.
Ghosts are typically just spirits with unfinished business, I've never really studied much on them. But they're not always tortured victims...sometimes they just have a message to get across.
Perhaps you're thinking poltergeists?
And if you've never met a ghost, how do you know they aren't real? It's because you don't believe, that you don't see them. ((That was in reference to another answer I saw.))

I don't accept the theory that ghost are the tortured souls of the murdered. I think they just can't find their way to where they should go. My experiences have been in houses and hospitals.

Maybe it's culture differences, but I think most ghosts are those of a lost soul or of an untimely death. Not avengeful spirits, but just spirits who aren't ready or don't know how to leave this world yet.♥
