no. It is about the money. If all the immigrants who came here legal or not just paid all their taxes and didn't try to get a free ride from the welfare system, I don't think people would care so much. it is difficult for taxpayer to keep paying the bill for their health care, school and WIC/Foodstamps when they work under the table and do not pay their part. althought the language barrier can be frustrating it is not the problem.

Behind The Times....?

As Far As Language, I Could Really Care Less
The Language Issue Is A Non Issue To Me

As Far As Security....
Yes We Are, As A Nation, Behind The Times

We Live In A World Where Nearly Every Nation On The Planet Hates Us (The USA)

And We Have People Walking Freely In And Out Of Our Nation Every Day
If A Smuggler Can Bring 500 LBS Of Drugs Into The USA
Over The Southern Border Unchecked
Any Radical Group
Can Smuggle A Weapon Of Mass Destruction Just As Easily
(And May Have Already Done So)

As Far As Anyone Knows,
There Could Be A WMD In Every Major City In The USA
ALL Of Them Brought Into The Country
Over The Southern Border
And Transported In A Pickup Or Van
Exactly The Way The ILLEGAL Aliens
Get Transported Into Our Nation

Our Federal Government
AND The Bleeding Heart Liberal Open Borders Crowd
Need To Get Their Heads Outta Their @$$ES
And Realize Exactly The Kind Of Danger We Face Every Day

You know who is most annoyed about this issue where I come from? Legal immigrants. My family is comprised of legal immigrants. Why should we have to learn English if others don't and can keep speaking their language? Why do French, German, Italian, Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc. immigrants have to all learn English (and do), but Spanish-speaking immigrants don't? I understand why businesses have become bilingual and I don't fault them for wanting to reach a greater market within America, but as far as the government goes, English is the official language of America, so learn it if you move here. Other countries like Canada have much harsher rules about speaking the official languages (English and French) than America does, maybe we should have stricter rules like the Canadians. People who don't learn English for whatever reasons are really doing themselves more of a disservice than this country.

Oh, and in school, he aprendido como hablar espanol y escribir lo tambien. No es tan dificil aprender un idioma extrana. (sorry about the missing accents though, my computer doesn't do them).

I don't think the U.S. is behind the times as far as language is concerned. If you travel to other countries, all of them have their native tongue first, then in places where it's necessary, they'll add the secondary language on signs and things. It's practical, efficient and keeps a sense of national cohesion. Here, since we're primarily an English speaking nation, I'm fine with that becoming the official primary language, and in places like Texas and other states along the Mexican border, add Spanish on public signs, etc. It makes sense to be practical and tolerant of the various languages spoken here, but have a formal "across the board" language to keep the United States united.

huh, interesting idea. We are behind Europe in how many languages the average person knows. But it has more to do with intelligence and open-mindedness than immigration.

My problem with illegal immigration is the number of people who are taken advantage of because of it and the fact that if so many people can get here illegally, then how hard can it be to smuggle a bomb over here, or illegal drugs?

i think a lot of it is fear....conservative americans are afraid of change...they have this idea that america is the midwest...i think if they spent time in a metropolitan area that they would loosen up a bit

'behind the times'? By whose definition?

The way I see it, 'illegal immigrant' and 'enemy invader' are one and the same.

But, that's just not very PC of me, is it?
