I am 16, and have been suffering from extreme highs and lows and major depression since i was 10. it has gotten worse in the past few years. i think my prants have it, but they dont know. i have always kind of known i've had it, but havent actually been diagnosed with it yet. so i was wondering what is the typical age for it to start and what medications are best usable? thanks to anyone who can help me :)

There are no certain age group that suffers Bi-Polar.It can happen at any age.You need to have a psychiatrist to evaluate you. The Doctor prescribes the best medicine for you but it takes 4-6 weeks to see if it will help you and if it is the right med./meds.
for you. With the right ones it can be controlled with medication just fine.I suffer from Major Depression and Bi-Polar.I'm sorry to hear you have these.I wish you the best.Don't give up no matter what.It takes time but it's worth the wait.

Our little boy has been diagnosed at the age of 9. This is not typical..It usually starts in teen to early adulthood. The meds will have to used to see how you tolerate them. Rispiradol, Clonidine, Abilify, Depakote Er, Lithium are a few. Good luck find a good doctor and support group and do not try to self medicate.

I am not an expert but from what I do know, it typically manifests in 20's sometiems earlier or later. Here is a link http://www.wpic.pitt.edu/STANLEY/1stbipconf/bipolar2.pdf#search='manifestation%20on%20bipolar'
I believe antipsychotics, lithium, and regular antidepressants can be used. Each person is different though and will respond differently to different meds. Good luck to you.

I don't know what medicines are out there but my best friend had a Bi-Polar child who showed signs of it before age 2!

Contact a doctor and get it figured out. You will be so much better for it.

check out the yahoo groups on bipolar disorder. a lot of people there can give you advice. first off you MUST get to a psychologist/psychiatrist. bipolar disorder can be dangerous. And yes, it really hits you in your late teens and early twenties, although it varies.
