1) avoid cabs. If you must take one, avoid cabs at all cost in midtown.

2) food: if you're really on a budget, eat pizza slices. still one of the cheapest -- and best -- foods in NYC. $2 per slice.

3) Avoid 5th Avenue for shopping.

4) If shopping is your thing, but you're not looking to spend anything, you can buy knockoff purses (prada, gucci, etc) on Canal Street. Just ask the store owner "can I see in back"? She'll quietly take you back to the "illegal" area.

Go to Central Park at all costs ...!!

Have fun!

Buy an unlimited Metro Card....$7 for daily. $24 weekly. It allows for unlimited use of the public transportation system. Buses and subways.

For a free "tour" of the New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty...take the Staten Island Ferry to SI and back. Stunning views...all free.

Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge...or better yet...Walk over the Manhattan Bridge. Both offer stunning views of the skyline and Lower Manhattan...both free.

Have a picnic in Central Park. Get a free map at the Central Park website and then picnic by the lake.

Take a walk along the west side...great park...great people watching.

Go to Rockerfeller Center. You can watch the filming of the Today show. Also great little pedestrian mall.

Have a dimsum lunch in China Town. Find a place called the Golden Unicorn. Fun and cheap.

Chinatown is very affordable for food and shopping. It gets a bit crowded and hot in the summer, but it's worth it to save $$$. Enjoy the sights without spending any more than a metrocard! South Street Seaport, Central Park, Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and get a slice of pizza at Grimaldi's. The list is endless and more than you can pack in over a few days. ;-) Good luck and enjoy the best city in the world!
